USB not recognized by iDrive

Hello Everyone,
I recently installed a Champ head unit in my 2009 X5 M Sport after the original finally stopped working after months of it starting/shutting off (it works for about a minute in the morning and then quits until it cools down again). The car has the 6FL option (AUX/USB) installed in the center console. It works well with my original head unit but the replacement Champ unit (ebay item) does not recognize the USB function. The AUX function shows up on the iDrive screen but the USB function is not listed. Also the AUX does not play music either. Talked with a dealer, one of their master techs and he said it is not a coding issue. Could it be a hardware issue inside the Champ head unit itself? Any ideas?
