Any recommendations for remanufactured engine sellers?

I'm seriously considering replacing the N62 engine in my 2008 E70 X5 4.8i.

Can anyone recommend any sellers of engines?

There's eBay sellers but they don't look great. Others are Ghassan, SharperEdgeEngines, GoPro, Autotechio, Bavarian Rennsport, Korman, CarPartPlanet, Zee Auto Parts.

Thanks

I think it is almost impossible to rebuild an engine (grind crank, valves, bore cylinders etc.) anywhere even close to BMW spec. so I think you would likely be disappointed.

I'm still doing my research. I know that I don't want a rebuild. I am looking at a full replacement with a remanufactured engine.

only company that remanufactures is BMW.

Perhaps I am being provincial, but they did the original manufacture- and hence would be the ones to RE- manufacture.

I dont think anyone other than BMW can in fact run a real re-manufacturing business. The rest of them are just rebuilding them one at a time. They just call it remanufactured.

I think there are good shops that can rebuild BMW motors. The issue is more one of what does the motor need and what can realistically be done to it. I went down this route with my project and quickly realized that the, while the Alusil bores on the M62 were strong and lasted a long time if nothing went wrong, it is very specialized work to hone them. The advice I kept getting for my low compression motor was “toss it and find a tighter motor with fewer miles”. The usual suspects can then be easily fixed (timing chain guides, leaks, etc). There are places around that can and will do a good job rebuilding heads, changing seals, gaskets, guides, etc. and giving you back a fresher, leak free motor…probably with a warranty. Refreshed M62 motors with good bores can go for another 100-200k depending on how hard you drive it. You’ll be chasing leaks again in half that time!

That said, is BMW still selling new N62s? I did the math on a new M62 4.6 versus finding a strong used one and doing a full refresh and it wasn’t much more for a brand new motor. Cost me a few grand more at the end of the day, but it is brand new. Granted, mine is a project and I also was looking for more power. 2 year BMW warranty on the motor, but I’m sure they would try to wiggle out of it since I installed it myself.

GetBMWParts.com ended up having the best price by far on it. Might be worth a call or email if you love the car enough to be considering a motor swap. PM me if you want the guy’s vitals that I deal with there. Super nice and refreshingly responsive. Took two bad crank pulleys back with zero questions, one of them i had installed for a few weeks before noticing a hairline crack on the flange from shipping.

If the N62 line is dead then I’d suggest finding a tight used motor with a good compression and leak down test (or at least know that the bores are good and any leaks are in the head) and rebuilding that motor yourself, or find a Indy shop that can do the work and is very familiar still with the m/n62 family. You could call VAC Motorsports, or Turner, etc and see if they will give you a recommendation in your area.

I think in real life GetBMWParts.com is BMW of Silver Springs MD. Probably don't want their cut-rate internet part biz to interfere with their outrageously overpriced dealer parts biz.

I also use them for big ticket dealer only parts. Like motors! Have done right by me.

Henn28 and ard,

Thanks for your input. It seems like new N62 engines are available at $19,500 + manifolds + electrical so that's not an option.

I got quote from reputable, experienced rebuilder for just over $13K plus I would have to ship core or X5 to them. That comes with 2-year warranty. Obviously going to cost more than I'd like if I want quality and warranty.

So the m62tub46 I bought was listed at almost 17 or 19k if I recall. GetBMWparts.com took 11k for it.

It occurs to me that you could reach out to a guy on Bimmerforums named Graham (posts under BimmerBreaker). Or ping him at ASCFabrics. Com (he sells classic and hard to find BMW upholstery and fabric). Graham has done some impressive N62 swaps and builds and I think knows more about that motor and your options than 99% of people.
