New problem !!! (solved: Faulty CCV tube)

Hope you're having a great fourth!

The E70! If it isn't one thing, it's another :-( As reported previously, replaced the MAP sensor in the inlet manifold and the engine limp home message disappeared. However, my wife took it out for a longer run and came back with the CEL on. I reset it and drove it the next day for ten miles. The CEL stays off until a hot restart. Then the CEL comes on but INPA reports that the errors are not actually ongoing. Fault codes are:

P2457which is insufficient effectiveness EGR cooler, faulty bypass valve or insufficient capacity.
4C83 exhaust pressure before turbine implausible
4990 exhaust pressure before turbine implausible
4729 NOx sensor after Denox kat performance or range problem (oxygen concentration too low on overrun)

A little tough to troubleshoot if the issue only happens with hot engine and the CEL turns on but there is no ongoing fault. I am about to pull the intake manifold to replace the vac lines (and replace the IM seals) but I'd like to know if anyone here has had these codes and what the issue was. Last time I had a hot restart CEL, it was the EGR-cooler spring. Looked in there and the spring seems fine but not sure until I get the fan out.

Thoughts anyone? Would it help to run ISTA-D? If so, which subsystem?

EDIT: I can see that this topic is one well rehearsed on various forums. Looks like a vac leak could be the cause for this, might as well dig in to the vac lines and pray it solves this issue as well.

Found the problem

Took off the engine covers to get to the vac lines and the IM. Was poking around to see if the EGR cooler spring was functional when I came across this little beauty.....

So, this piece of flex pipe comes with a sensor attached, not yet sure which sensor that is but the price for the piece with the electrical items is $179.99. Lovely....

While searching for the part number (haven't found the correct item on realoem yet) I came across an item on Facebook that is just the flex pipe for $18 from an outfit in Dallas, GA. It is on this website: <https://www.tunemyeuro.com/ccv-hose-for-bmw-diesel-3-0l-engine-m57-x5-35d-535d-and-335d-aar2238/> It is labeled "CCV hose".

Ordered it and while waiting for its arrival I will dig around in the vac lines. They look pretty sorry but can't find any obvious leak yet.

CCV hose and that electric part is a heater. As original part the hose comes together with the heater element. Nr.5

Got it! Many thanks.

Beyond me why BMW does not offer the hose part separately.... Going to replace only the flexible bit of hose and see how it goes.

Another enigma is the electrical connection that runs down to the turbo behind this pipe? It Tees off the wiring that goes to the MAF sensor? I studied Realoem for a bit and this connection shows up on the engine wiring harness but I can't find what it connects to on/under the turbo?

What are the wire colours on that connector?

Slightly off topic; As I was trying to see what needs to be disconnected to take off the IM, I came across an excellent video. It talks about the weak spots of the M57 engine (as applied to US based 335d and X5 35d) and the "have to do" maintenance items. Anyone who owns a 35d or is contemplating buying one should see this video and think about how to deal with these issues! The author could have been a bit more detailed in describing the failure modes but overall this sums it up nicely. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs-ke0xxK9E>

By the way, I am not promoting the delete of emissions equipment, but it does point out what goes wrong with the car. Another thing to note is that DPFs can be cleaned and reused. On the X5, the sub-frame has to be dropped but any decent shop can do this quite easily.

EDIT: The wire, I think, goes to the A/C compressor. Strange to route that right across the front of the turbo.....

Cleaned and disassembled the CCV hose. Both the large intake elbow and shorter bottom piece seem fine without cracks or damage. It is really only the flex hose.

Didn't have time to take off the IM today and I might wait and see if fixing the CCV hose takes care of the codes, that way I will know whether I have other issues to chase or only cleaning the IM and replacing the vac lines.

No more check-engine-light :)

So, this morning two packages appeared on the door step, one being the Foxwell for the Cayenne (needed to reset the oil service message!) Second was the CCV hose from Tune-my-euro. Nice item, was only 5 minutes to click the original clamps back on and re-assemble the whole lower intake duct. Et voila! No more CEL. (The little triangle warning is for service requirements.)

I suspect this item had been cracked/broken since a while, as last fall I was having some mysterious messages about DEF efficiency. I guess with the CCV breathing in air after the MAF sensor the whole fuel system is running out of kilter. So now I can get back to regular maintenance and replacing the vac lines and do oil changes.

BTW, does anyone here know how I get to the right procedure in ISTA for brake bleeding while activating ABS?

EDIT: Found this on e90 post, going to take a look if this exists in E70.
"....vehicle management / service function / chassis and suspension / traction control / brake bleeding for special cases) however you can only select the option if you let ISTA/D perform a vehicle test first, otherwise the "display" button is grayed out. Previously, once I entered ISTA/D, I had selected the option to identify the vehicle without conducting a vehicle test. Apparently if you don't let it do the vehicle test and identify the various control units you won't have access to the various control unit procedures."
