Thumbs up E70 vs. Audi Q7

I attended this morning an event hosted by Audi to introduce the Q7 to select potential buyers. Here’s the website if you care to find out more: www.audistreetsoftomorrow.com.

There were about 50 Q7s (all V8) available for guests to take out to the streets. In addition, they had a track set up with a bunch of Audi vehicles (including the Q7) and their competitors (including the X5). I’ve got to tell you guys, the E70 has some big footsteps to follow! Here are some of the highlights of the Q7:
  • Keyless start-stop engine button
  • MMI (their iDrive) is very intuitive and easy to use
  • Rear mounted color camera that works like a charm
  • Voice activated everything
  • Bluetooth. I synched my phone and was ready to use it in 20 seconds.
  • Nav is perfectly situated to avoid glare problems
  • Steering controls have wheels which make it A LOT easier to use than buttons
  • Seats are amazingly comfortable. Much more than my X5’s
  • Panorama roof has diffusion screen which allows air without sun glare
  • Second moonroof over third row seats with tilt-open
  • Third row seats
  • Cupholders are perfectly located and can accommodate two extra-large cups
  • 80” from tail to the back of the front seats (with rear seats down) as opposed to 70” on the E53
  • “Kneel” feature which lowers vehicle at the touch of a button on the back to help owner load heavy articles
  • Programmable power liftgate to set how high it opens

The Q7 is loaded with technology. The handling is amazing and feels more like a sports car than the E53. I know this part is subjective… but it looks HOT HOT HOT! Pictures do it no justice.

I had heard Audi set its sight on the X5 as the target and in my humble opinion, they accomplished it very well. Actually it, they blew the target!

I really hope the E70 delivers in looks, handling and technology. If not, I know where I’m going next. 

Jose

I kinda like the audi too. But would never buy an audi. As for the Q7 being better that the X5 it should be. the E53 was designed in the late 90s. Actually 7 years later its still on the top of the list as far as suvs go. Im sure the E70 will put the X5 back on top when it comes out. Thanks for the review though.

Yup yup. The E70 will be great. It will probably get some initial 'eww I don't like what they did here' but at the end of the day it will take its place again amongst the top SUV/SAVs.

Hehehe 7 years later it's still on top of the list? In your dreams man! The Audi Q7, new Mercedes ML and Porsche Cayenne are all above the E53 by a visibly margin.

Only with this E70 can BMW hope to regain the 1st spot, or at least to stay around there.

Here in Europe, the X5 is not at all at the top of the mafiaman's choice of a car. The Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg capture the top spots. Here and there you see an X5 and an ML, but not even close to the volumes from the VW group.

Every car has its days.

Ive admitted its been surpassed in some ways. Although i think as far as performance and handling it still holds the top spot. But like i said this thig was designed in the late 90s. Its the oldest one out right now. And im sure the E70 will have no problems surpassing the rest.
By the way does anyone else share my feeling that Bavarian is an official X5 hater. Is it just me? Keep driving you minivan or wagon bavarian ill stick to my X5s

Had to go look at some pics. Didn’t even know about the Q7 and after looking at it.... I will pass. To be honest the front end looks like a Chrysler 300M and the side view doesn't do it for me. I am sure in the next few years there will be so much technology in all the luxury cars that each will have a version of each others top features. The name tag of BMW really does stand for something to me. This is my second BMW. I have had a 2002 M3 Conv for the past two years and picked up a 01 X5 really cheap as a second car for the boat. All I can say is I will drive BMW's til they take my license away.

As soon as I get my Camera back, I will post pics of both vehicles.

That may be due to the fact that all the dealer buyback lemons from the US are being shipped back to European auto auctions. A family friend had a Cayenne Turbo for about 6 months and he made the dealer take it back. This coming from a guy who has a Lamborghini LM002.

I would not be surprised if my dealer buyback Touareg is now ferrying black market Marlboros and Johnny Walker to Bulgarian casinos. Somewhere, some thick neck named Svet with a H&K tucked into his Paul Smith jeans is cursing as his tire pressure monitoring system goes off. And only because Svet sticks said H&K into the VW dealer's nostril will he get an appropriate loaner car.

BMW is well versed in raising the bar. Be assured the bar is about to be raised with the E70 and downstream variants.

Wrong, wrong, wrong The ML is having major problems with the X5.

You can't say the Q7 even has a listing on the top spots because its too soon to tell. The Touareg can compete with the Volvo XC90 but not the X5. Pricing in Europe puts the Touareg cheaper than the X5.

Now that leaves us with the Cayenne which I admit is one of the X's biggest rivals. In my opinion, is a matter of taste. I just don't like the Cayenne but respect porsche.

I'm not too clear as to what you mean saying the Q7, Cayenne and Touareg are on top of the mafiamans car but I do know the X5 is still a major contender

Just my 2 cents as far as Europe goes.
