X5 iPod integration?
My dealer tells me that BMW has an iPod integration kit that completely controls the ipod. He's not totally sure of all the functionality.
I assume it can play/ff/rew/pause. Does anybody know if it will display the song titles in the nav interface? Will it be able to control playlists? |

I believe it does show on the Nav screen. I know DICE makes one that does.

I just picked up my 2007 X5 on Saturday. There is an aux input located in the center console. From the iDrive Entertainment screen, you can select aux input. Although BMW announced a new interface for iPods, it is not in the 2007 X5. Therefore, playlists, tracks, artists, etc. do no show up on the iDrive screen. You control the iPod itself to make selections.
There are two options for connecting your iPod to the aux input: (1) a mini stereo cable connected to the iPod headphones output; or (2) a cable with an out line feature that connects to the iPod dock connector. The problem with option 1 is that, although you can increase the volume using the car's volume controls, the output from the iPod is not strong. Therefore, you have to crank up the volume on both the iPod and the car. If you switch to a different audio source in the car, make sure you've first turned the volume back down. There are two products that I have read about for option 2: (1) the Sik imp; and (2) the SendStation pocket dock. Both connect to the iPod's dock connector and take advantage of the line out feature of the iPod. You then connect a mini stereo cable from the device to the aux input in the car. |

My dealer tells me the new ipod interface is available for the 2007 x5. He's already added it to my invoice (~$700 installed).

My bet is that it is the same iPod interface kit for the MOST bus that just became available for the 3, 5, 6, and 7-series. The Nav screen on the E70 is similar to the ones in the 3, 5, 6, and 7-series, but the resolution is much better.

Let us know what you get, because the press release indicated that the new interface would not be available on the X5:
"BMW today announced the debut of a new iPod interface that will enable tighter integration of the iPod for the newest generation of BMW models, according Leftlane News. The new system provides direct access to playlists, artists, albums, podcasts, and genre via the car's interface. The new BMW Interface for iPod will be available for owners of the new BMW 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7-Series. It will also be available for the new M5 Sedan and M6 Coupe. The new Interface is compatible with all iPods with a dock connector, including the iPod nano and the fifth generation iPod. The BMW iPod Interfaces integrate the iPod through a direct connection in the glovebox. The company said that the original BMW iPod Adapter will continue to be available for 2002 and later BMW models: X3, X5, Z4, and previous generation 3 Series." |
