PROBLEM: Default Settings Lost/Returned

This morning I got in the E70 to find that many things were not like the day prior.
  • My preset Sat Radio channels were gone
  • The stereo was turned into the weather station
  • The two user programmable buttons did not do what I programmed them to do
  • The time went from 24 hour to AM/PM
  • HUD goes full brightness
The only thing I did last night was remove the emergency key from the remote and kept the remove out of range. I unlocked the car and hit the start button. I then locked the car with the key.

I was verifying that my theory that the car CANNOT be started without the remote. I was correct. I entered my vehicle this morning using the comfort access feature, stated it up, and drove away finding the changes noted above.

At work... I returned and hit the unlock on the remote just to see what would happen. All my settings were back!!

Either there is a gremlin in the dash or using the emergency access key did something. I will try another test after work.

im guessing what happened was that since you used the emergency key, the car took the perference setting on your emergency key. and when you used your normal key, it used the settings on your normal key.

I believe that is the case as well..... Just wondered why the remote did not kick in and set them back automatically in comfort access mode...

If I can duplicate it... I will report it to BMW. Maybe they can correct the software to return the settings properly.

there is a glitch in the system though. when i turn on my car, sometimes the brightness setting just goes back to default. and its just the brightness setting that changes. and i think some other owners said they have experienced the same problem

OK.. I did a test and was able to re-create the same thing. It does go to a default with the key alone. I am guessing the computer has no idea what profile to use. This will protect the last users settings.

Not that you would use the key alone that often to really be a bother.... You just have to remember to unlock with the remote to get your settings to be used while of gaining access via comfort access.

yes, the dealer told me the vehicle's preferences are set by the key. If you use a different key, settings will be gone until the orginal key is used.

I understand the key seperate "Remote" memory... I had actually used the emergency "key" at one time. So therefore I determined that there is a default setting for entry with the key. Keeping in mind that the "key" is NOT equiped with any RFID device.

The problem was that I returned with my "remote" and via comfort access made entry and my setting did NOT return. I had to actually hit the unlock button on the "remote" to make it happen.

So there is a flaw in that the system that fails to return the settings.

hmm...I understand now.. I don't think it is a flaw...you just need the remote to contact the vehicle by your action for it to work....what happens if you use the 2nd remote (on comfort access)?

I talked to the wife and was thinking the same thing... I will check it out tomorrow. If we both get in with remotes.. As if... She does not get one and I told her so....

I think it remembers the last remote used for comfort access entry settings. I believe the settings change by way of the key or remoted being pressed.
