Removing running boards

I just got a 3.0 sport with factory installed running boards. While I like the look, they are at an inconvenient height and constantly hit the back of my leg (and dirty my pants) when getting in and out. Does anyone know if they are easily removed? Are they just bolted over the regular side trim, or would I need a piece to replace them? Anyone know?

Why did you get them in the first place?

Because they look really sharp. On a test drive they were not a problem, because you only get in and out once. It only became apparent after getting in and out of the car 12 times a day.

I know what you mean. I really like the look and was going to have them on my 3.0, but on my last test drive before buying, my salesman mentioned that they're really more for show than use (not really wide enough to be used comfortably, although they can be used) & they'll hit the back of your leg getting out if you don't use them. So even though I really like the look, I thought that might get tiresome after awhile.

Know this is an old thread. But did a search first to find the answer to this quesiton. Figured I'd just give this thread a bump instead of starting a new thread.

The running boards are fine for me. But my passengers are having too much of a hard time with them. Need to get them off.

Is it hard to remove? Do I need to buy any new parts to replace (ie: fender flares, etc)?

Not hard to remove, however, you need a new "base" underneath the running board.

It's funny. I find that a lot of ppl are complaining about the X5's running boards. I hope ppl understand that you CAN step on them to enter and exit the car. So, it shouldn't be a problem getting your pants dirty!

They are too pretty to step on!

Choose between your pants or the boards, one of them is gonna get dirty!

Thanks! Any part no (and/or pricing) for the base?

I step on the running boards all the time. Great for washing cars with too. But the running boards often catch ladies heels. I've had them get in my car with a shoe still stuck on the running boards. Really not sure how they are stepping on the running boards to cause that. Kinda funny.
