Major Issue !!!

I came across a problem today...( only been a few days I had this beauty ) that has me worried..heres what happened:

Arrived home on driveway which is sloped a little uphill.....parked...left engine running and put into "P" park.
Got out of vehicle, opened garage door, came back to X5 and shifted to "D".
Just as I give some gas to move, the gear shifts by itself to "P" PARK !!!!!
I tried it 3 or 4 times and same thing !!
Then I decided to put it in reverse and see what happens....SAME THING...except second time I did it, it allowed me to reverse but as it is reversing it shifts to "P" and an array of grinding noises....obviously as vehicle is on the move in "P" mode....!
I then decide to switch off vehicle.....lock....then unlock get back in and restart and then try again and 2nd time round vehicle begins to move forward and I successfully park in garage !
I had no handbrake on by the way !

I HAVE ABSOLUTLEY NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON??? I checked if it has anything to do with Start Off assistant but there is no mention in manual of car moving to "P" to prevent any roll back...just that you must within 2 seconds move off otherwise vehicle may roll back.

Im thinking now what happens if I drive this and during higher speeds it suddenly shifts to "Park"....dire consequences to transmission and engine....anyone else???

I had the exact "problem"...until I figured out the door wasnt closed all the way. Evidently there is a protection that wont let you drive if your door is ajar. At first I was really freaking out though.

WHAT A WONDERFUL SAFETY FEATURE !

But I wonder if I did any damage as car was moving for maybe a 1-2 secs after it moved to "P" position....I didnt like the grinding sounds that resulted???

i had the same with the reverse gear. it is the door. make sure you shut it!

what happens if you open it @ high speed? That would be bad, but I think it is only active probably under a certian speed, like 10 mph or so.

you mess up your hair...
...but, if you have been drinking you might fall out.

actually the computer wont let this happen. If you are in drive and you accidently push the lever to park, it wont change.
If you are in M and you reach the redline, it automatically changes to the next gear. It wont allow you to cause damage.

haha. i always wondered what would happen if i shift my car into park while driving at high speed.

your transmission would probably leap out of the car and you might die, depending on how fast you are going...

The park pawl likely won't engage, and you will hear what sounds like a very loud ratchet sound. If it does manage to engage, you may break it. You don't fail the transmission, simply the lever (pawl) that holds the vehicle from rolling in park.
