Can i lose

Hi there this is my first post so go easy on me.I have just ordered an x3 3.osd m sport for my wife who is disabled and she qualifies for the car at zero rating. That means we dont have to pay the vat so for a £40000 car we pay £33000.we get that on wednesday but i also ordered the new x5 which we will get in june again we dont pay the vat.The dealer has told me that if we take the x3 back in june they will give me what i paid for it which is good for them as we only paid £33000 and they are selling them at £38000 with 6000 miles on the clock. My question to you lot is if i buy a new x5 in june (no vat)will i get nearly my money back if i change or sell it 12 months on with only about 5000 miles

Thanks in advance

No guarantees, but a reasonably good chance.

Not sure about exactly what you are planning for the vehicles, but doesn't zero-rating apply to vehicles built for disabled people? If it is a standard vehicle that has some adapting technology (like a wheelchair lift) then isn't only the modification zero-rated?

You may have already seen this link:

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsP...ument#P68_3708

If the vehicle is adapted, ie modified substantially, then I wouldn't think that it has the same retail value as an unmodified vehicle, due to the existence of bracked that are welded on, etc. The potential buyer in this example is also in a wheelchair (only as an example), and so they could alternatively buy the a new vehicle zero-rated as well. If in fact the modifications aren't substantial, and anybody would want the vehicle (disabled or not), then it all sounds a bit dodgy to me.

This is not dodgy it is perfectly leagal my dealer has a few people who change there car every year. You are right it has to be modified for the disabled person to be able to drive it or ride in it.My wife has problems gripping with her hands so a simple bolt on spinner to the stearing wheel was all she needed this can be removed when we sell the car so it does not look like the car has been adapted at all.But there is nothing dodgy about it i would rather pay the vat and have my wife free from her problems.

I reckon you have a very good chance of getting your money back....just don't go too mad with the options. I would say you need to have the Media Pack (or at least Satnav on it's own) and the Dynamic Pack as I think these will be the most in demand options. Satnav is a must, but check with your dealer as he will hopefully advise you well given you are obviouslt a very good customer. You will get very little extra for the low mileage, it will make the dealer keener to buy it but they won't pay you much more!

A freind of mone ran several X5 3.0 D Sports on the old shape trading them in every year and suffered very little depreciation. I reckon that the new X5 will be similar for the first year or so as I think the waiting list will grow once it hits the road. (I saw one over Easter in Switzerland....it looks fantastic!)

I was not attacking in any way, it is a limitation of message boards that emotions and intent are often lost in the translation. No offense intended.

The link I provided lists what modifications are considered to qualify a vehicle for zero-rating. The page specifically lists the example of a steering wheel spinner, commenting that it is not a substantial modification but may be combined with a lift for a wheelchair user to make a vehicle 'substantially modified'. If the total modifications do not qualify as 'substantial' then only the modifications are zero-rated, not the vehicle. What I was trying to convey was that HM Revenue service may become interested in frequent sales of vehicles that are purchased under the zero-rating scheme, and then 'flipped' in the market. That is not to say that it is unreasonable to trade a vehicle in, not at all, but rather that purchasing a vehicle and using the zero-rating scheme to offset depreciation may attract their attention. Just my 2 pence.

Good luck.
