Ah, doubt it. BMW doesn't use an engine of that size, currently 5.0 and 6.0 are the big boys.

Although I have heard nothing and like most assume that BMW will go with the V10 5.0 for the top of the range X5, am I right in saying that the 4.8 didn't exist until it's launch with the X5?

I think it's pretty unlikely that the 5.0 V10 will find it's way into the E70. I think BMW have publicly said that there won't be a proper M version on the X5 but more liley one that has been "breathed on" like the old 4.8is. I think the V10 (or versions of it) will be reserved for full M cars. M cars are as much about handling as power and I think BMW may feel that an M version of the X5 dilutes that ethos. Maybe that will change with the X6.

although i don't believe bmw will introduce 5.6L onto E70. however, i do believe that bmw need to up their engine lineup to compete with Mercedes and Audi.

Mercedes basically put AMG on every model. bmw doesn't have anything compete with cars like S-class AMG, ML-class AMG, SLK AMG.. etc.

even Audi has things like RS4, RS6, RS8. i am sure bmw will not want to lose in the horsepower game. (especially the core value of bmw is speed and handling)

my guess is that BMW didn't see the horsepower game coming so fast. They almost have nothing to compete and the twin-turbo 3.0L patrol engine feel almost like a afterthought. However, i expect someone with the "motor" as their middle name is working hard on the next generation engine right now to compete in the next round.

I've heard that argument about M cars for years. The reality is the Porsche, Audi and Merc all have 500+ HP SUVs in their lineup. If they can make money selling them, that is the bottom line. ///M stands for ///Marketing, use it.

Frankly the E70's handling with the sport suspension and adaptive steering is phenomenal. It out corners my E85 Z4 with sport suspension. With 500 hp and a driver selectable suspension height it could be an M car.
