going on the 26th to a champagne and canape reception at a country hotel, my dealer will have the new car and its new marketing tool a 12 person hot air balloon to try.

i ordered my car 6 months ago but have to wait till september for delivery, i waited 13months for my 05 car so another 5 months is no problem also the sport will be out then and i may even move my deposit to the 3.5ds if the release date if in 07 and the price is right.

hope you enjoy the car and let us now how the new tweeked diesel and gearbox is.

I understand that they are having some sort of logistics nightmare at Thorne. Apparently they have fired their top 3 managers there in the last couple of weeks. Hopefully those expecting their vehicles for next weekend will get them.

Hi Simon,

To shed some light on the twin turbo diesel question......The car will be called the 3.0sd, same as the X3 version and we should expect to see the first models arriving very late 07 or early 08. I have been in touch with a number of dealers trying to secure the earliest date and so far it looks like sometime in Jan 08 for me. However this isn't confirmed as BMW still haven't released allocation numbers to the dealers yet. One of the dealers said that due to the overall high demand for this engine, they have been told that the earliest build date now available is already Jan 08. So if you are looking at the 3.0sd model I would look at getting your name down sharpest.

As for cost, again the dealers have been very vague, but I think it's going to be between £4-£6k on top of the 3.0se price. This is of course for the M-Sport model as the se model wont be launched until later in 08.

I've waited so long for this car that I only hope it will be worth the extra.

Don

My dealer has his gig on Thu April 26 (funny these food and booze events), 1st delivery is on Sat 28. I will take delivery in June as I was waiting for USB option.
Re 3.0sd Car Magazine mentioned last year that it was planned for late '07. I am relaxed with the 3.0d, it is the family car, mostly driven by the wife, so probably best to leave it to one turbo
It sure will be a fantastic car tho, but since I managed to option up a 3.0d to £55k, I hate to think what I could have achieved on the 3.0sd...

Yep I've got the champagne and dinner invite at Ringwood Hall for a preview on the 27th, must be something BMW are funding for customers with orders. Launch is on the 28th. The dealer still only has the one black launch car demo, no sign of mine which is due in anytime.

I think the 3.0 sd Sport will be more expensive than that. The the 3.0d Sport is widely rumoured to be circa £5k more than the 3.0d SE which makes some sense given the price of the Dynamic Pack. The 535d is approximately £2.5k more than the 530d so I would expect an X5 3.0 sd to be something like £47k or £48k.

I currently drive a 535d Sport....it's one hell of an engine.

I've had an order in for an E70 X5 for just over 2 years now and managed to get a sneak preview today to help me make up my mind on my order. I sat in the 3.0d SE launch car which is currently awaiting prep. I have to say that once again whoever is the marketing genius at BMW GB who specs up the launch cars, he/she has done the dealers no favours yet again. Titanium silver, standard 18" wheels, black leather and brushed aluminium trim - hardly an inspired choice IMHO and not one that I suspect will show the car off in the best light. Privacy glass, 19" wheels and a panoramic sunroof would have worked wonders I'm sure and would be far closer to the spec most buyers go for. The new shape looks good though and is much more modern in the metal than the pics would suggest. It also looks bigger than the old car which it instantly makes look very dated. The car I saw had the third row seating option. I'm 6'2" and could easily sit in the middle row with plenty of comfort behind a driver's seat which was set up for me. I can't understand some of the US guys comments about lack of 2nd row space with this option??

I was a little disappointed with the quality of the interior plastics which seem inferior to the previous model. I've owned a lot of BMW's in the past including a first generation X5. I had one of the first E60 5 series and felt the interior quality of that was poor next to the E39 but was pleasantly surprised by the E90 3 series which indicated BMW were back on the right track. The E70 is closer to the E90 in terms of quality but it really should be ahead of it when you take the price tag into account. Nappa leather, different interior trim and anthracite headling with the panoramic roof would make a significant difference I suspect to the impression of quality.

Overall I think BMW have done a good job and I hope you all enjoy your cars. I'm going to pass as the car just didn't appeal enough to me personally.

ISUK,
Thanks for the report, you migth well be the 1st UK customer who actually has been able to sit in a UK car! Agreed on the specs, sounds lame, Dynamic Pkg, Pano Roof and Media Pack are going to be a must so really the base price is closer to £47K
The 2nd row can be adjusted with the 3rd row option, which I think might make the 3rd row worth it just for that. Not sure by how much though but that should help getting a touch more room on the 3rd row when needed and otherwise give the 2nd row plenty of space.
If I recall correctly from the E60 forums, does that mean you are sticking with your 535D then? It is one great car, I just need the X5 room for the family hauler
