The emergency unlocking mechanism can be accessed from the front passenger's side. Only the instrument-panel cover needs to be opened here. Behind this cover is a loop, which, when pulled, unlocks and opens the glovebox.

To me this is nuts. You have to dismantle the front panel in order to unlock the glovebox??? Maybe I am interpreting this wrong since I (still) don't have a car to check it myself.
It's no big deal, you just remove the small side panel of the dash that faces the door with a screwdriver (just pops off) and pull the loop, shouldn't take longer than 1 minute.

ya, i kinda agree with you. some of the design on new X5 is just not user friendly.

technology should make people's life easier, not make things more complicated.

for example, the grove compartment. why not just make it a simple mechnical design like other bmws. don't need power to open and lock it.
the cup holder on center console. the 2 black sliding door are not very conveneint in a way. I would like it better if it is a push open/push close like the ash try on the other bmws.
the arm rest centrol storage open left and right. it would be more conveneint if it open upward. again, like other bmws.
the cup holder on second row seat (when option with 3rd row seat) is more complicated than it should. you need to flip 2 piece of plastic to use the cup holder. (and flip 2 pieces to close it) why not design it as one push open/close.

anyway, these are just very small things. just something otherwise make the new X5 a perfect car.

As I've said before: BMW's gone overboard with the technology. Get over it, BMW.

Call a towing service that has dolly wheels (or a flat bed if the ebrake is not engaged). they place them around the rear wheels and lift the car off the ground - so it is not riding on it's own wheels. Then it's off to the dealership where I am certain they have a procedure to deal with a total power failure.

Better yet, call BMW roadside assistance and let them figure it out.

Update:

Picked up my car three days ago, everything seems to be back to normal (knock on wood)

Service still says diagnostics error indicated Ignition was left on for about 95 minutes and I have to tell you that is really baffling because I have no idea how that could be. Anyways, this time I will blame it on a gremlin or something and keep an eye on it.

I was however told to be aware of the pedal module issue if it happens because it will pretty much do the same thing but mine tested OK now.

Oh well very happy to have it back and that Sh**ty grin is back on my face. What a ride. Still loving it.
