Side step problem?
Anyone had any `staining` of these running boards?
Took the car in to the BMW agent and they washed it, came back with white staining, sort of bleeding out of the small rubber treads, complete with water marks on the gloss black window surrounds. None of these marks will come off ! The BMW agent says `they all do that !` Looked at their X5 demo cars and they`re 10 times worse than mine. I`ve never experienced this on the two other previous X5`s, or my `06 ML. |

I have a few similar marks after the dealer washed mine. Never any when I do it at home. I reckon it is overspray from whatever they use to clean the wheels. Would the angle of the stains on your boards back up this theory?

Try waxing them. Seems to keep them clean for me.

Many dealers use a very acidic cleaner to remove brake dust because it is cheap, quick and easy. Most of the "detailers" I mean that lightly are young kids that spray a gallon of the cleaner standing from about 5 feet away and the overspray and splashes can get on the aluminum running boards and it will stain. Doesn't damage the painted surface of the wheels if it is removed quickly. Maybe this is what has happened. I have seen this before on unpainted aluminum. Ask them not to use an acidic cleaner. Better yet, tell them not to wash the car at all.

It`s not `drift` from the wheels, it`s been sprayed directly on.
I think its the cheap wash chemical they use and have said this to the sales guy. He of course said no way! The only time I`ve seen these marks is because of caustic chemicals. My car has had three `attempts` at having Supagard paint protector applied at the main BMW agent and during one of these visits it returned with the staining. At first the BMW guy blamed the Supagard wash chemical, but after myself speaking with the Supagard agent he said no way was it their stuff...so if its not BMW and its not Supagard who is it? All I know is my shiney new BMW came back with stains, so BMW it is! |

Well if you read the warning on the BMW dealership wash chemical I bet you it says "caustic". Probably contains Caustic Soda as most do.
