steering wheel not returning

My steering wheel is not returning to the same possition when the car is turned on. It raises properly when I shut it off and lowers when I turn it on, but then it pulls in approximately 1 inch from where I had it set and I have to adjust it towards me everytime I start the car. I have tried setting the seat memory functions and that didn't fix the problem. I took it to the dealer and they were not able to figure out why it was happening. They tried 2 other X5's and they didn't have this problem. Does anyone know if this is an easy fix?

from the title it sounded like you were going to say it doesn't return to center after making a turn... got worried for a sec.

I presume you have calibrated it by moving it to each extremity of ajustment , in /out and up/down ?

I have the same problem in my car since beginning, depends of a key I’m using. One gives problem with steering wheel position and second set of keys gives problem with left mirror or steering wheel. I have appointment to fix it next week.

I have the same problem. Dealer couldn't replicate the issue, then during second visit for same problem dealer manages to find a TSB that identifies this problem and states a software fix will be released in Sep 07 to correct. Here's the details:

TSB SI B 32 02 07 General Electrical Systems
Subject Electric Steering Column Adjustment Malfunction
E70 (X5)
Defect Code 32 31 15 12 00

Steering Column does not move down when the engine is started

"Software fix is expected approximately September 2007)

Had the same problem with my X5. When I took it in for service back in June dealer found same TSB article and while article said software fix was not available till Sept 07, they had the fix already and coded the car with it. No problems with wheel not returning to stored position since. Work done at Circle BMW in Eatontown, NJ.

Good info. Do you have the receipt from the dealer listing what version was installed? Thanks!

Reciept does not show any code version. Just says "Update software as per SIB 32/02/07."
