I wanted this option but it was not available when I ordered my X5. Any idea if this auto tailgate can be retrofitted?

No it can't.

The rear hatch is 2-part, though it makes no mention of this. It seems the bottom part is still full manual... correct? One thing this may effect... what if the bottom half is opened and you try to auto-close the liftgate?
Or are these auto-liftgate models just 1-piece now? The illustration shows 1-piece... never seen this change mentioned. |

this feature assumes the driver will only want to open the top portion of the tailgate (it is still a two-piece design) for loading or unloading groceries or other items that don't require having to open the bottom portion...
not sure if there is a sensor for detecting an open bottom in cases where you forgot to close it and are auto closing the top. it'll probably just close (but not lock) and just ignore the open bottom!
