why is front right lower 'grill' blocked while drivers side is open??

in the front of the car, the lower grills in front of the wheels... one side is open (drivers) while other side is blocked and just slightly 'looks' open but really looks different when up close.

why is this? isn't this for air to get to the front brakes? it just looks funny to me... maybe i like symetry too much??

The open one feeds the A/C condensor. Since there is only 1 condensor, there is no need to open the other side, since nothing behind it needs cooling. If you look in the front of both front wheel wells you will see the left one has grills to exhaust that air after it passes though.

I was not aware they even offered an open version for the right side. What's the point I wonder?

Think about the 4-zone aircon, it should have 2 condensators right, so one left, one right, that might be the solution...

We have the rear climate package (and third row seat, which has another addition to the system), but still only 1 condensor.

which really sucks...when you turn on the rear air the airflow drops over 50% in the front. BMW shame on you! This is a luxury vehicle, what were you thinking?
