2006 X5 Brake

I have my 2006 X5 3.0 and have 28,000 km and the "check brake lining" light was on. The dealer said I have to change the brake and the rotor as well. It cost me CAN 1,000. I found it is rediculous for only 28,000 km and the brake needs to be changed. Any one has the same problem?

Seems way early to me. I have 41k miles and they're almost due, but not quite. Do you guys up in Canada not have the same maintenance program, i.e. brakes are covered too?

28,000 km is a little low, but not unheard of. Usually brake jobs do include rotors on an X5. You have alternatives to the dealer (an independent mechanic, using BMW parts, or non-OEM parts). The $1000 is high, even if both front and rear were required (and at that mileage it should only be the front).

The biggest influence on brake pad life is the driver, sorry to say. It is a heavy vehicle, and hard use of the brakes will cost you at replacement time.

For comparison purposes, my Canadian (Vancouver) dealer advertises the following prices as value service specials (flat rate), taxes not included - these are specific to the 2006 X5 3.0:

Brake Discs & Pads (Front) $474.00

Brake Discs & Pads (Rear) $436.00

Brake Discs & Pads (Front & Rear) $893.00

Brake Pads (Front) $221.00

Brake Pads (Rear) $206.00

Brake Pads (Front & Rear) $400.00
