Chip tuning the 3.0sd Info.

I've been gathering info on chip tuning the sd and would like to share my finds. I would like to thank the members that helped me gather this info. I hope it helps some of you. These is data for the European model.

Information below: power (hp), torque (Nm), 0-100km/h, v max, mod price

Standard 286hp 580Nm 7sec 235km/h
Hartge 335hp 675Nm 1600 Euro Gross
DMS 338hp 700Nm 850 GBP + VAT
Wetterauer 330hp 660Nm 255km/h 1500 Euro Gross
Ziptuning.nl 330hp 710Nm 6.2sec 256km/h 700 Euro

As you can see, ziptuning from the Netherlands give very optimistic performance values. DMS from the UK have the highest hp. I'm still awaiting info regarding 0-100km/h times from the other companies.

All tuners claim that fuel consumption is reduced under the same driving conditions by a minimum of 10%.
I can't guarantee this info. I've just been researching chip tuning and wanted to make things a bit easier for people like myself.

I don't know about sd model but "chipped" E70 3,0d is money spending, my previous E70 3,0d was chipped now I have new one with standart 3,0d and don't see any real difference... Yes, previous 3,0d engines was really good after chipping but this no.

Hmmm, Hartge claims their chip gets the E70 3.0d to 100km/h in 7.4secs, upping the power to 275hp from 235hp. Standard 3.0d does 100km/h in 8.1secs. Which company chipped your X?

How does this effect your overall car warranty? I know some companies say they warranty the engine for say 1-2 years with these chips but how would this effect the rest of the car? Could BMW refuse a waranty claim becuase you have increased the power of the engine which they could argue has caused wear on suspension parts etc? Also in the UK the car comes with a 3 year waranty and I don't see the chip tuners offering the same 3 years (admittedly ive not really looked into this).

In general, modifying a portion of the vehicle doesn't negate the factory warranty on the rest of the vehicle. That said, if the modification is considered by the factory to have contributed to the failure, then they are not likely to cover the failure. Your relationship with your dealer matters here, as they are the factory representative for first line decisions on warranty coverage. If they are easy to work with, you are that much better off.

Some tuners offer their own warranty; Dinan is a good example. They promise to work cooperatively with the dealer and allocate warranty expenses to the appropriate responsible party. You have to decide what the financial strength and backing is from the tuner when you are evaluating the risk. Also, it goes back to the dealer relationship.

Ultimately, modifying a vehicle while it is under warranty adds some risk to the owner. The phrase often used is 'You have to Pay to Play'. If the modification is relatively conservative, if many others have done it with good results, then it makes your decision easier, but you still have the risk of being denied warranty coverage for a failure that you don't see as connected, but which the dealer sees as having been impacted or even caused by the modification.

As to your suspension question, I think it is more likely that early hour failure could be related to driving style (abuse) than to engine horsepower. I would consider a transmission failure to be a gray area, as would a cooling system failure.

I don't know what the maximum torque rating is for the Diesel transmission is but the maximum Torque permissable for the 4.8 is 650Nm (i.e. below a lot of these chips) - so I would check out the rating for the Diesel transmission before chipping or there might be a very large pool of oil.
