Picking up my 08 4.8 this Thursday should I go through with it?

I still am debating on whether I should pick up my 08 X5 4.8 this Thursday because of the possibility of the twin turbo 4.4 V8 from the X6 replacing the current 4.8 V8 in the X5 very soon since it would have more hp/torque and better gas mileage. Also with the thought of Performance Dynamic control being included in the 09 X5's. What advice, comments, and words of encouragement can current and future owners give me on what I should do. If it was a lease I wouldnt care as much but since this will be a purchase what suggestions do you offer?

unless money's tight, i'd get it and ride it before the built-in twin turbo engine comes out. BMW does not make powertrain upgrades that quickly.

Expect to see an M version of x5, and twin turbo X6, hybrid X6 and then twin turbo X5 to come out after that.. i'd say 2010 would be the earliest.

You never want to buy the first model year of a BMW....the bugs will be unbareable. By the time the bugs are worked out, you should be ready for something new. I say go for the 4.8i and wait about 2 or 3 years on the X6....Phil

I see two issues in your qeustion: First is X6 vs. X5. Second is '09 X5 vs. 08 X5. On the first, it really depends on your need for the hauling space you would give up in the X6. If you don't need it and want the performance lift, it's worth the wait. Personally, I need the space so will stick with the X5. On the second, again it's worth deciding how important the incremental features of '09 are worth to you. But be careful of getting frozen into waiting forever since there are tweaks and minor upgrades with each model year. A final thought: If you're planning to hang on to the X5 for a long time, buying the '08 will give you an extra year of ownership with the current model before the next model change (2014-15) which usually helps a bit with resale (i.e., selling before the redesign).

With the expected price tag of the X6 higher than the X5 4.8, I think I would pass at this point. I just ordered an 09 550i M-sport because I could get equal performance and room out of a vehicle $20000 cheaper (according to my dealers GM who just spent a week with the head of BMW NA sales).

So, I say stick with the 4.8i. But, you already knew my opinion.

I don't think BMW has announced exactly when the 4.4 Twin Turbo V8 is coming to the X5. My guess is it will not happen in 2009, because they'll want to see how well it holds up in the X6. So earliest for X5 is 2010. And if 2010 is the 1st model year, you'll have the inevitable annoying bugs, which means 2011 will be the first "comfort-zone" year to get the X5 TT 4.4. That means you've got 3 years of riding to do before your turbo upgrade, so if you have cash in hand now, I'd jump on the current 4.8. And if the 350 horses don't do it for you, you can always get the inevitable Dinan mods to boost it up to 400. I'm sure those will be out in a few months (intake, exhausts, software, etc.).

And not to sound cliche, but you could be dead tomorrow, so play with as many toys as possible TODAY.

np2004, when did you order?
