Auto liftgate questions

Has anyone had problems with the liftgate? If I open it with the key fob, I can't close it with the liftgate switch on the center console, only the button on the bottom of the liftgate.

That is by design. I also have ocassional problem closing the gate, where it will "almost close" but then pop back up a bit - approx quarter of the way - as if something got in the way. Looks like it just needs better alignment.

^ Yes by design in the US because of safety concerns. Someone must be present back there to start its close. What I don't understand is if there's already an auto-retract function should something get in the way, why not make it work from the keys/center console?

I don't get that, that isn't a US thing. There are plenty of SUV's in the US with auto-open and auto-close lift gates with key fobs as well as interior switches.

That may be, just didn't want the assumption that this wasn't possible in the US because of 'safety standards'.

As noted earlier it is working as it is intended to work in the US, presumably for safety. The ability to close from the center console or key fob is disabled in the US. I believe the feature is enabled in other countries. It does not seem to matter to BMW what other SUVs allow (or their customers want......)....a fully functional auto close feature!

Not to much of a shocker, it took till 2008 to have the feature

Not a feature in the UK, not on my x5 anyway. Seems the only way to close the tailgate is with the button on the tailgate like in the states. Not sure if anyone else in Europe can confirm my findings also

All things considered it's not a terrible flaw. Usually when you need the gate open, it means you need to put something in there. Someone IS already back there to push the button. If it were a small child - they may not be able to reach the button if it's set to open all the way up - that's the only real negative imo. Then again, why would you have a small child behind your vehicle anyway?
