Build your car at cars.com. That way you can see the MSRP and Invoice prices.

I agree. when I bought my Z4 I negotiated up from invoice, rather than down from MSRP, and no one had a problem with that approach. Just remember to discuss what "invoice price" is when you finalize the deal, as there are some costs on the invoice you might not be aware of, e.g., in Major metropolitan areas there is often an advertising fee which the dealer pays to BMW on every vehicle they sell. People can argue back and forth if this is valid, but my appproach is that if it is an incremental variable cost that the dealer must pay on every vehicle, then it is a valid charge.

But in the end, it is the absolute price that matters, so just make sure the final result is a complete "out the door" price with everything in it.

Bring invoice price up to your dealer and he won't play games with you. Talk with more than 1 dealer and get a bidding war going. They may hate it but they're also making a profit if they make the sale regardless.

Go to cars.com, figure out the invoice, and offer invoice + $1500 + no maco + no stupid fees (paint protection) and call it a day.

I'm thinking 5% over invoice - thoughts?

I'm thinking of offering 5% over invoice. For the vehicle shown below:

Black Sapphire Metallic $0
Tobacco Nevada Leather $0
Light Poplar wood trim $0
Cold Weather Package $900
Premium Package $1,750
Rear Climate Package $900
Heated rear seats $350
Running boards $300
18" standard wheels (Yuck! But I'm having a hard time justifying $3600 + $995 for the 20" wheels) with dinky 255/55mm tread - my Boxster S' tires are wider than that!
Standard 12 speaker stereo (the upgrade is for 16 speakers... when would it be enough?)
Destination & Handling: $775
Total MSRP as Built $59,475

This comes to about MY PURCHASE PRICE = $57,500 or roughly 5% over invoice.

Is this good?

Actually, it looks like you are offering WAY less. Invoice for the car I mentioned above is $54,925. + 1500 you suggested = $56,425

Is $1500 over invoice doable? Seems a little low, but maybe it's correct?

Basically, you are offering them 2.7% over invoice.

I'm not into percents, so I'm sorry that I couldn't do the math. I still stick by what I said, though.
