Is dealer installed iPOD interface EXACTLY the same as factory?

I would like to add the iPOD adaptor, which unfortunately, the X5 4.8 that I have just purchased did not have it as an option from the factory.
I remember with the 3-series dealer installed iPOD adapter, you had a wire sticking out of the glove compartment and the interface was buggy.
Has this changed for the E70 X5?
Is the dealer installed iPOD exactly like the factory, i.e. fitted in the glove compartment and interface works happily with iDrive?
