Internet in your X5?

BMW's ConnectedDrive brings the whole internet to your car... on EDGE

Posted Feb 23rd 2008 3:27AM by Darren Murph
Filed under: GPS, Transportation, Wireless

And you thought puttering around the intarwebz on your EDGE-capable iPhone was bad -- just think of trying to find anything on the 'net while accidentally moseying through a dodgy part of town. Nevertheless, BMW is gearing up to offer "unrestricted access" to the web as an option in any new 2008 vehicle, but alas, it's only for European clients at the moment. Of course, BMW's no stranger to letting bits and pieces of the web into its motorcars, but this creation will let you catch up on the latest gadget news and pre-order the latest Elmo doll from the comfort of your heated seat. Sadly, the service is only available to front seat passengers when the car is moving under 3mph (it's for the best, we know), but your kiddos can surf into all sorts of bizarre chatrooms while seated in the rear. Nothing like a predator tailing you on the autobahn!

Not to sound like a Luddite, but more "stuff"/distractions to
consume one's time, vision and attention, while the main
goal is safely driving down the fookin road.

Not beating on you rufus...I like your C.Walken Ava, too.

motordavid, you don't suspect it would be disabled while driving, like the tv and dvd?
edit: I just noticed the under 3mph thing in the original post

Disconnected? ...half of the posters here have TV Drive or
whatever it's called. It's like req'd posturing: drive the Eway at
75 while watching Oprah or ESPN or, movies.

The whizzes will have a work around for that in about 5 mins.

GOOG'ng at 85...I can hardly wait, espc. while I'm out riding one
of my M'cycles: SUV matron/master looking in mirror, cell phone,
texting, Starbucks in lap, watching CNN and GOOG'ng the net. WTF?

so there should be no tech added to a vehicle which could be exploited to work while driving?

MD--I agree! Let's enjoy the ultimate DRIVING machine and leave the distractions to those who would rather surf than drive!

I would phrase it differently. There should be no technology added to the vehicle that causes distraction to the driver. It is the Ultimate Driving Machine, not the ultimate mobile office. Remove the TVs, internet, and cell phones. If you need to work in your car, sit in the back and hire a driver.

I completely disagree, I welcome the addition of these kinds of technology which can be completely useful to all sorts of people including those who don't work in their car. The idea that some people might alter the technology aftermarket and use it while driving is a reason it shouldn't be included, is an irrational one in my opinion.
