power cable off battery

I notice there is a red cable off the positive side of the battery in the spare tire well(battery cover off as well to get to). Looks like a good place to wire in power for video system. I've been removing the negative connection on the battery when working on connections there but I wonder if I really need to bother. Unhooking the power to the car requires a lot of computer resetting and the all wheel drive system has an error for the first few minutes, sometimes longer after doing it. With BMW electronics being what they are, I'm concerned about doing this.

My question is if the post this auxillary red cable is connected to acceptable to wire to directly and do I need to bother disconnecting power when hooking up? Anything I wire to it I'll have a fuse holder without a fuse until fully hooked up to avoid a surge on the electronics. should I be concerned doing this?

Jeff
