It's better than calling it a wagon (or station wagon), which if not for it's ride height, its really what it is.

In Australia we call these vehicles either SUVs or in general, four wheels drives (4WD).

I agree it is all relative. If I stil had a one ton around the X5 would not have been called a truck

When I had an X5 and a Z4 at the same time, and there were several other cars in the family, I called it the truck as in "let's take the truck today". All the rest of the time it is referred to as a car here.

If necessary it is called an SUV when referring to luggage capacity.

It is never called an SAV, that is just so lame.
