When should I purchase my X5?
I'm a first time poster, long time reader. I am looking for some advice: I am going to purchase my X5, but I am not sure when I should. Initially, I thought the new iDrive interface was coming out this spring, so I waited until now. But then, I read that the iDrive interface, plus facelift and new engines were coming in the fall production, so I decided to wait until then. But now, I am reading that some (it not all) of these featues will be out in spring of 2010? Can someone give a definitive timeline on when these features are coming? I really don't want to have to wait another year to buy my X5. But I also know that I won't be happy if I buy one now, and the above features come out within a year. Thanks in advance! |

I understand - I really wanted the new iDrive in our car but simply couldn't wait any longer for it - so we are stuck with the old iDrive (and it is really annoying - still have only found one radio station). Rest of the car is nice though - so it all comes down to being able to live with the decision or not

It's always going to be something. First it was for them to solve some software glitches in the 07, then the diesel model to be released in 08, then the M Sport in 09. After the new Idrive is out in '10 they will be doing a mid-model life cycle "touch up" which will change the options and look some what in '11. Then will you want to wait for that? By then you're thinking there's only 2 years left until a whole new redesign in 2013 for the 2014 model.
You'll never get there. Just pull the trigger, be happy with what you have and trade in or buy another one when you really want something. Otherwise, you'll never enjoy the X. |

I always find it interesting how many times on the internet forums someone will ask a question, and rather than providing an answer to the question that was asked, someone feels it is necessary to tell the person he really shouldn't be asking the question because he is wrong in thinking the question is important.
But in answer to dbot16's question, I do not know; however, I too am waiting for the new i-drive interface, and give it 80% odds to be in the Fall launch of 2010 production. |

Thanks for the replies so far.
Of the upcoming features, the new iDrive interface is probably the most important for me. In another post, LeMansX5 said: "The big change is on the interior and under the hood. BMW is working towards having entire fleet with TT engines. So all non-TT engines will be gone sooner than later." So I am interested to know what are the big changes coming to the interior - and when (Spring 2010?). Thanks |

BMW Marketing is really smart they keep the info. on new features a closely guarded secret. One of the reasons why BMWs sell so well is that they have the introduction of new features all figured out, which keeps their sales high throughout a model's lifespan. For example if we look at the 3 series, midway through E36 model they introduced the 2.8L engines, bumping the top of the line 2.5L but it was still available but they were calling it 323 (maybe to not frustrate the 325 owners), then E46 the initial 2.8L was bumped by a 3.0L midway, and then again I can only imagine how frustrating it must have been for the early model year E90 owners to find that the top of the line 3.0L they bought could now be had for a few grand less in the "new" 328 and the top of the line is a mouth watering 3.0L TT.
From your post it seems that the new iDrive is important for you, I would suggest just wait for that to be available and pull the trigger else BMW will continue playing these mind games and they won't be the ones suffering.

My dealer in Canada has assured me that the new iDrive will be in the Sept/Oct shipment. They will be available to order in July so that's when I'm ordering my new one.

the new idrive with its nicer display, better/faster interface, and harddrive for storage is a big deal in my opinion... I'd definitely wait for that. The other big deal would be the twin turbo 6 engine. I wouldn't wait for a facelift though.
In a way I'm sort of glad I didn't wait for the diesel like I wanted because now that the diesel is out I would definitely want to wait for the idrive. A Jan '08 purchase would've turned into a Sept. '09 (?) purchase - way too long for me. You have a much shorter wait right now... just go the distance since it's obviously important to you. I wouldn't want to be stuck with the old idrive in a brand new car now. BMW is definitely good with staging new features. My service advisor even said that in our last meet... they always get you...

I waited for the diesel, but didn't wait for the new I drive. I just ordered mine without navigation. The old I drive works fine for me...

I waited for the diesel as well and was hoping for the new iDrive, but just decided to get mine at the end of April. I actually think the current/old iDrive is fine and haven't had any problems using it. However, it sounds like the new iDrive is a big deal for you, so maybe you should wait. I do like the idea of it being on a hard drive, etc.
