wow ouch indeed. I'm afraid that's NYC for ya. Bumpers on most cars are terribly marked up and I can't help but shake my head when people parallel park with "friendly bumps" front and back. In this case, it looks like someone cut a turn too close.

got an absolutely ridiculous quote from the dealer - $2800 includes new fender (which I understand) and a new bumper cover (which i dont) he also said the hood will need to be repainted to color match (?!?) going to shop around the private shops...

I believe you may need to get a second opinion on that. No need to paint the Hood IMHO.

With that logic, I think the rest of the car will need to be repainted to color match the fender/bumper.

I don't understand the fender thing. The bumper and fender are two separate parts. One doesn't have to be replaced because the other is damaged.

Painting the hood is a blend so the paint matches. However, if a fender is replaced, it is the adjacent door that would get the blend. The hood, because it is on a different plane and curve, probably wouldn't require a blend.

However, if the bumper is replaced, the right fender might have to be blended as well.

This is how the work is done so that it is like new and most good shops will do it that way because customers like the results and they don't get into arguments about color matches and such.

Gets expensive, but there is no alternative other than to accept lesser results. Vehicles are not made to be repaired and the parts are obviously too expensive.

Vehicles are not made to be repaired? A body shop could probably pull that out and fill it/repaint it in a day.

I thought this is why they have specific color names such as "alpine white" along with a color code. I brought up the color match when questioning whether to bring the aero kit to an independent shop... and it was stated as long as they have the code, it would be fine.
