Unhappy Got my X5 today! But... something's wrong from the very start

I finally got the X5 today and drove only about 5 miles.
Since this is my first luxury vehicle, I was really impressed with the handling, albeit little bit heavy. (X5 3.0si)

But... the joy was short-lived... When I received the vehicle, the fuel gauge indicated that I had about 3/8 of fuel remaining. So I decided to gas it up with premium fuel. When 42 liters or 11 gallons of gas went in, the nozzle clicked, and I thought it indicated that it was full. So I went back in and drove off. But I quickly saw and realized that the tank was only about 6/8 full. I thought there was something wrong with the nozzle at that particular gas station. So I visited another gas station right away. And after about 7 liters or 2 gallons of gas went in, it clicked again. And that's when I realized something was not right. A gas station attendant approached me and asked what was going on, and I briefly told him the situation. Then he tried again, only to click again after a few seconds. I was just watching and he tried again and again, click after click and succeeded in putting 9 liters or 2.5 gallons of more gas, making it total of 16 liters or 4.2 gallons of gas on the second gas station. And that made the fuel gauge reach the maximum level.

So I put in 58 liters, or 15.3 gallons of gas all in all.

I'm not sure if something is really wrong and don't know if I should take it to the dealer. There's no warning sign but still...

Anybody know what's happening to the vehicle? Should I take it in?

So much for BMW reliability... Otherwise the vehicle is perfect. Except that it always tries to give me the lowest gear possible at all times, like whenever I take the foot away from the accelerator pedal.

That sounds very strange. The next time you fill up, squeeze the pump to the slowest setting and see if it stops prematurely again. If it does, you may have a problem, but I have never heard of that before.

It appears that the majority of 3.0si don't have gear problems (transmissions). Sorry to hear the gears and the gas gauge are off. Normally BMW doesn't have gas gauage problems (that used to be a very MBZ thing!). See if it gets better with your next fill up (which in an X5, will be Very soon!! If not, then make an appt., and request/politley demand a BMW loaner. Good Luck.

I know, I searched this forum top to bottom and found no problem like mine! I'll keep a close eye on it.

Thanks for the support!

I had similar problem with my FX. Gas nozzles have a sensor that is supposed to stop feuling once the tank is full and there is back pressure generated from the tank. Sometime if the fuel nozzle is very fitted to the gas tank opening, the gas fumes can generate enough back pressure to stop the nozzle before the tank is full. At least that was the theory I came up with. Now, I simply wiggle the nozzle and fill once more right after it stops automatically just to make sure it is full!!

Hope that makes sense and is helpful!

hello

just a thought, we do not travel around with our tank much more than half full, although we have come across this from time to time. Generally it is the refueller being very sensitive to the back pressure and depending on what angle you hold the nozzle will dictate how much air can escape quickly. Have found that when we go to a petrol station like that just changing the angle seems to solve it.

Have heard of faulty restrictors on 5 series but never an X5. You might like to check the E60 board if you find that the problem persists with all refueling...

Cheers

John

Thanks! I'll try refuelling in a different angle.

the gear issue is a known problem try getting a software update it definately helps.
i find it really amusing that when you pay a premium price for a suv like this you dont expect these stupid little problems. they just reduce the fun factor.

That doesn't sound normal. Take it in and have the dealers look at it. Might be a very easy fix.

As far as the gears go, have you tried resetting the "learned driving style". Can't remember the exact term for it nor how to do it. I just remember reading about it in the forum. It's where the car's transmission tries to learn and adapt to the driving style. A reset might help.
