Electronic Damping Control (EDC)

A warning just came on my main viewing screen (not instrument panel) that said there is a failure in the EDC system. Anyone know the seriousness of this warning? I looked in the manual and it is not listed. I have set an appointment but am curious.

I had this message and the shocks, satellites and control module needed to be replaced. You can still drive, but it won't be very smooth.

The vehicle is still driveable and there is no imminent danger (the chassis isn't going to seperate itself). Contact your dealer and make an appointment. I'd refrain from going around tight bends at 50mph though.

I have had this problem twice. Once 10 days after delivery & again at 8 months. In both cases it was a bad sensor....3 days to fix each time (part delivery.) It was drivable but very rough & bouncy.

2007 4.8 with sport pkg and adaptive suspension pkg. Current mileage approx 40K km (25K miles) I had the electronic damping control error message. Like others had stated the rear suspension was quite harsh. Dealer tested and determined the right rear shock was at fault. Replaced under warranty, been fine for couple weeks now. Part required 4 days for transit.

Not anything of real mention, just wanted to add in case others experience similar problems.

You don't want that to happen out of warranty... I think those special shocks are around $1,000 each, plus labor.

^ the self-leveling shocks are the $1k figure you're saying correct? Any idea how much regular shocks may be on the E70 in comparison? Or perhaps the sensors? Still trying to gauge if an extended warranty is worthwhile.

I checked realoem.com for shock price while waiting for repair, they were close to the $1000US figure each. Likely why dealer would not do both at my request. Check the site, sure your vehicle will be listed also.

If I do keep this vehicle I may want to consider the extended warranty, ouch.

The shocks are separate from the self leveling air bags.

I have had this problem twice on my 2008 X5. In both cases it was a bad sensor. As others have noted the ride can get to be very rough on uneven surfaces until repaired.

Given repair costs of some of the most mundane items, I don't know how anyone can rationally justify not buying the extended warranty.

Just imagine the cost of the servos that control the adaptive drive roll bars. I don't even want to imagine what those items cost, if the shocks themselves cost $1k.

There are so many sensors on the X5, a good majority of which appear to be visible in the wheel wells and open to the elements, that I flinch at the repair costs of a major component going out.

The warranty is expensive, I'll grant you that, but with $1k shocks...
