Fitting Exhaust Tips

Ok, I'm caving in to the mod bug. My completely unmodified X5 is about to get some exhaust tips (oval - not square 4.8 versions). Anyway, my question regards the removal of the plastic trim around the 3.0si standard exhaust - is there a way to remove that without removing the whole bumper? Is it a brute force thing or is there a trick to removing the retaining clips?

Any help appreciated.

I Promise to post pics when finished!

EDIT: Fixed: the trick is to push in on the trim with a screwdriver at the side of the trim piece. This pushes the trim back inside the bumper which can then be jiggled about to get it out.

you beat me to it.

Did you have to weld on the oval tips?

Hi, do you have a pic? I have the standard tips and want to add the Chrome ones from BMW. Are these the ones you fitted ?http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...50&hg=18&fg=95

I think these are the chrome overlays which fit on 2007 3.0 and 3.0d models before they came standard in 2008. I don't think these actually change the shape.

No - I fitted some aftermarket ones that are wider than they are tall. The ones on RealOEM are as Fastbuck says, the round ones which slip over and just cover the existing tips.

I concur with getting them even being difficult - it was a right pain in the backside! I will take some photos soon, but the car is so dirty at the moment due to all the rain and the mud/leaves on the road!

Does anybody know if you can get the slip on oval tips instead of welding it on? I can't seem to find any.

mine are slip-on - you put them on and tighten up some bolts - however the bolts keep loosening - so need to find an alternative solution.
