2008 X5 Park/Drive Selector Question

Hi, I have a 2008 X5 3.0 and I was wondering if there is any sort of safety feature that would prevent the car from engaging P when pressing P on the transmission shifter while the vehicle is in motion. Please help!

Of course there is a safety feature meaning that If you press P while the vehicle is in motion nothing happens.(I have verified this on my X5)

As I pull into my driveway, I have a few buttons to press, namely the homelink garage button, the mirror fold button (necessary), and the door unlock button (so we can get bulky things out first - like kid carriers)... one time I actually hit the P button without thinking about it (things on my mind I guess) just a few feet before I normally come to a complete stop. It actually engaged and the vehicle stopped abruptly (didn't sound mechanically painful as it was a slow roll). So it will work while the vehicle is in motion, but it PROBABLY has a speed limit on it.
