Catalytic Converters - illegal to remove where you are - update on exhaust

Hi All
I have discovered that the only real way to get an audio track from the E70 4.8i that is similar to the E53 4.8is is to remove a couple of catalytic converters. I am now on my 4th exhaust and still not happy, so down to the removal issue.
However, this is illegal in Australia with massive fines for exhaust/workshops and owners if discovered.
Im curious if this law exists elsewhere in the world.

As a recap, I think Im resolved to a better than stock exhaust from my suppliers, but will hand the E70 4.8i to the wife, sell the 4.8is and I'll buy the new E70 4.8is/twinturbo/M/V10/whatever it will be when its announced. I already have my name down as top of list with BMW list when its announced.

Just a shame we couldnt get the audio track i was seeking, the E70 has 4, yes 4, catalytic converters.

for some vehicles you can get aftermarket cats that are designed to sound nicer than factory in conjunction with a matched aftermarket exhaust. taipanxp is one company here in aus that do it - http://www.taipanxp.com.au/

There are only one set of cats on US cars, mounted on the headers. We do have a pair of resonators after the headers before the muffler, but no secondary cats.

I know it was a mod on the e53 to remove the larger center resonator, and I was considering replacing mine with a couple of bullet resonators. Just not sure what the end result will be.

call Dinan. at least you are close enough to visit his shop.

i do find this thread kinda funny however. i have modded my pickups for years to be loud and proud. oddly enough i don't think i want that anymore in my DD. i have plenty of other stuff i can mod i guess. not to mention the noise gets old after awhile.
