The oil filter cap has the torque spec printed on top of it.

Says you need a special tool, but I used one of those rubber strap wrenches (xmas gift from dear ole Mom).

It also has an arrow indicating the direction to tighten, which initially scared me thinking it identified a reverse thread!!! It is not!!!

The oil drain plug was torqued at about a gazzilion Nm's.

I measured about 1 - 1.5 quarts low when I filled up the 7 quart bottles with the old oil.

Not a bad job at all.

have you confirmed the factory fill isn't a break in oil? Lot's of MFGR these days (even Subaru) use a special oil loaded up w/ HIGH levels of moly and/or other special lubricants for the break in period (see Bimmerfest - BMW Forums - View Single Post - Break In Oil Change)

On the M models that break in period is more than just oil, they also do some ECU magic as well (that enables launch control, etc). Just because your car isn't a M, doesn't mean it has a regular FF.

The thread you guys are responding to is coming up on being 4 years old. The poster BCA last posted 18 months ago, and sold the X5 around then, according to his posts.

That's one problem with doing additional oil changes on the assumption that a vehicle will be kept a long time. Usually they aren't.

OK, I get that. But I don't get asking a question of someone who isn't here.

So how do you get an accurate torque reading use a strap wrench?

Calibrated Wrist.

Same one dealers use when they tighten the drain plug!

A

PS I remember years ago thinking a wrench, just to fit the end of an oil filter with a 3/8" drive fitting, was such an extravagance... now I have a bin in the shop with literally a dozen different sizes.

I don't have a dozen, just three or four. And one is for a Toyota, because all machinery deserves a modicum of respect.

Stay well

Is there a DIY on an oil change for the N63 engine? Looking for drain plug size (8 mm ???) and filter location. I only have SAE hex so I am guessing I'll have to buy a metric one.
