any oil change DIYs for the e70?

Hi all, originally i planned to get a CPO e53 but ordered the 2009 e70 30i instead. cant wait for delivery next week. Not sure if it's justified but i'm uncomfortable with the 20,000km oil change interval. i'd like to DIY a post break-in oil change so does anyone know of any good DIYs for the e70? thanks

I'm also interested in this...will be approaching 1200 miles soon and was planning on taking it to the dealer for a break-in oil change. But I might attempt it myself if someone posts a good DIY. Thanks...

No, he likely means 1200 miles. The practice of 1200 mile break-in oil changes comes from the M models, which use a different oil. They had (and may still have) specific break-in oil. That is not the same situation on non-M models, but some owners like the idea of doing an initial flush.

hey JCL, greatings from the east (toronto) you seem to know a lot about bmws. have you ever attempted a diy oil change on the e70? or any other diys?

Not on an E70. I did my own servicing on my E53 and 325xi, and lots of non-BMWs. Years back I did it for a living. I have a 535i now, and the X3, but they are still under the maintenance plan so the dealer does the oil changes.

Not having a dipstick would be a bit of a hassle, but other than that I expect it would be just the same as any other BMW.

I am not a fan of additional oil changes. I follow the manufacturer's recommendations. That doesn't mean just the lights, I have had my dealer change oil early (at BMW's expense) on all my vehicles with low annual mileage. There are those who believe that additional oil changes are necessary. I just don't agree with them.

i haven't actually done one yet but was under the truck for my 7500 mile change. this is what i remember. BTW, sorry mine is a 4.8.

there are two access panels under the truck.

the filter has a drain plug. loosen and drain this first.

drain the pan.

remove filter (little sketchy on this one)

put it all back together and fill with oil.

Pretty simple procedure.

3.0:
In engine bay:
1. remove intake neck and unclip the top of the air filter housing. (to expose the oil filter cap, covered by intake neck)
2. unscrew oil filter cap.
3. replace oil filter; moisten replacement rubber o-rings.
Underneath:
4. remove the service opening on the reinforcement plate on the bottom of the car. (small plastic cover)
5. remove drain plug and drain oil. Tightening torque: 25 Nm

Oil capacity for 3.0:
6.5 liters
7.0 liters for engines with oil cooler

thanks is there a torque rate for the oil filter cap too? i did numerous oil changes on my retired e53 and the torque for the drain bolt and oil filter cap is 25nm i believe. i wonder if the e70 is the same. if no one does a DIY by the time i do my post break-in oil change i think i will write one

Exactly right; I was planning on doing an initial flush just because I plan on keeping this vehicle a long time (that is, IF I can break my habit of flipping vehicles every 2-3 years!) and want to do everything I can to take care of the engine.
