Question X5 4.8i 2008 E70 - DTC Codes Help!!

Greetings everyone,

I need help with the DTC codes for X5 4.8i 2008 E70:

P0056- Oxygen sensors 2/2 circuit?
P0305- Cylinder 5 misfire
P1330- Manufacturer specific?

When idling, car is not running smooth which confirms the #5 misfire. Not sure if there is a way of checking whether the O2 sensor(s) work (bank 2, sensor 2) and that would be causing the misfire?

A knocking noise is also present, mostly after it had a chance to warm up (when starting cold, is very low in the background). Would this be the third code (P1330)?

In advance, I appreciate the help.

Did you do any work to the car? Why not bring it to the dealership? It's under warranty.....

Unfortunately is not longer covered by the warranty as it had water damage.

A quick google search came up with:

http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/th...ssageID=351658

17738 P1330 Cylinder #6 Knock Control Limit Attained D

Any pointers?

Thanks!

So it's not under warranty, but did you have any work done on it recently?

Yes, and it turns out that, except lights and engine noise, it was running smooth prior to taking it to the shop . Ignition coils and sparkplugs were replaced on all eight trying to troubleshoot these items without any luck. Now it misfires and still has all lights/codes on.

HaroldC,

Would you have any pointers or direct me to someone that knows about this?

Also, in the event that the engine noise points to an internal, mechanical issue (and not, for example, an oxygen sensor malfunction related knocking), do you know anyone out there able to rebuild an engine like this?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

I need more background on the car in order to try to diagnose the problem. Here are few questions:

1. You mentioned that the car no longer has the factory warranty due to 'water damage'. What exactly happened? Flood car?
2. Has the engine ever run normally after the damage?
3. Your current symptoms are
-rough idle: does it sound lumpy or misfiring?
-CEL on: when did this turn on?
-knocking noise: Does this vary with engine speed?

BTW - working on that motor is not going to be cheap. I know of a few people knowledgeable enough, but at that point it might be better finding a replacement engine. There's no telling what the damage could be.

Most likely, as P1330 for BMW means the knock sensor is detecting knock and timing cannot be adjusted any further to correct it, i.e., knock sensor adjustment at the limit.

HI All,

Sorry for the late reply; I was away for the weekend.

Thank you for confirming the code (p1330); would you know if this code is somehow related (mechanically?) to the other two codes (P0056 and P0305)?

Many thanks for your help.

Beto
