How long will a new order take?

I live in Chicago and I'm in the market for a new 2009 X5 4.8i. I want to order a new one but, I have heard mixed stories on how long it will take. 3 weeks all the way up to 8 weeks. Does anyone know how long the production to delivery would take these days?

I would check with your local dealer. It all depends on various factors including your location of course and specs on your order. The dealer always orders vehicles for their inventory in advance and they are able to exchange orders with other dealers before actually taking delivery. I had placed an order for a 2009 4.8i and my dealer found one with my exact specs but in production for another dealer. So they swapped orders and I got the one that was further ahead in the assembly line. (Which I cancelled at a later date anyway, since I found a fully loaded 08 for less! )

Maybe your dealer can find you one with your specs without having to wait at all!

Is it possible to do a factory delivery (similar to European delivery)? Maybe that would save time. And if you are from Canada, it will save almost $1,800 in freight and PDI charges too.

No I would have to wait for it to come to Chicago. Does anyone know the actual timeframe from start to finish?

there are so many variables in this, I think only your dealer can give you a correct answer, mine took about 8 weeks which I consider very fast delivery (my dad's Mercedes SL took 9 months ... yep, you can grow a baby in that time )

Yes, 1 week actual production, and then depending on where you are in the country, anything from another 3 to 5 weeks give or take a week here or there.

I'm still waiting ... and I'm on week 5 now. I should get it next week I think.

Factory delivery was wonderful. Saves no time as dealers build number has to come up. You still pay the delivery, but they pick you up at the airport, buy your supper, hotel room, breakfast and provide a one-day classroom and track DE with a vehicle like the one you are picking up..

X5 owners get X5 off-road course, and lesser BMW buyers get an X3 if they opt in for the course. Also optional was ride in M5 on the track with a drifting demo.

Factory tour was not available due to retooling for new model, but museum tour was.

All in all, great experience!

At Motorwerks in Barrington I have been told several times that a US made car (X5) would take about a month, and a EU made car would be about 6 weeks.

When we ordered our 06 X5 we were in Detroit - took us a month there as well so I suspect its true for all of the great lakes area.
