Tranny Software update?

I know the tranny issues have been well documented here with some talk of a supposed software upgrade. Did BMW actually make good on it? I have an 08 4.8i (May 08 build date) and the jerky tranny is very annoying - primarily during city driving. The car just lacks smooth starts and just seems constantlyl unsettled. The only time it seems to work correctly is when you gun it on a very long straightaway. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Take it in and ask for an update. Mine was updated a few weeks ago and it is much better (so far).

updating PROGMAN will make a big difference. The transmission is all software controlled so with the latest update it should be much better. I had the same issue with my 07 and with the latest update the tranny is like butter! Good luck.

I had updates done multiple times on my '08 4.8i...and sadly, for me it never helped. Honestly, I think it might have made it worse. In the past, I had transmission updates done on my E46 330cic..and it totally solved the problem. Don't know why it did not work for my E70. I do know some folks, that the update worked for...so I would for sure give it a shot. The transmission in our '07 750Li can be quite rough too at times. Our dealer said the transmission mixed with the 4.8 V8 engine gives these results. I know, total BS. Good Luck, and please let us know if the update helps you!

I just had software updated to install sirius reciever...but i also have a very jumpy transmission. Would this update have included the Progman?? or are updates all done individually? the update idnt seem to help the jumpyness at all, so i was just wondering

The way it works as this. The coding computer determines what ECUs (Electronic control units) on the car need updating based on their current configuration. This is why, in some cases reprogramming a BMW can take almost 8 hrs if a large number of ECUs need to be reprogrammed.

So by installing say the sirius receiver, although the technician will go through the retrofit procedure, its certainly possible that other ECUs will get reprogrammed during the procedure.

Anyone know why it takes so long to program BMWs? e.g., is the interface slow, do they use slow flash memory, etc.

I just can't figure-out why, with today's technology, it can take so long to essentially just download some programming.

Let's say if I take my car in tomorrow, do I ask them to update all ECUs? How do I know whatever is the latest version of updates? I took my car in last time and they reprogrammed my steering wheel for exmaple, so it now pushes in and tilts up when I exit the car -- it used to go up only.
