why would they put the X6 lights on the M-X5? i just dont get it$#@^%

Why do you think? They fit/made them fit, looks slightly different
compared to regular X5 and, it's a "parts bin" move that offers a
different look from existing parts in inventory, for little cost increase,
production-wisw.
Good looking cars, both...imo. Not on my radar, however.

The differences in the lines are very slight. Overall you'd notice it is shorter in height, but I'd just as soon get caught staring into the large intake than the headlights. You'll also notice the amber side marker is horizontal now because of the new bumper... maybe the headlight assembly had to be shorter to accommodate it all.
