Not a fan of the reckless over boost of an engine, all the systems are designed to work together. I have some experience with 'tuned' diesel engines in American Trucks, and there are huge differences between tuners.
I don't like any "tuner module" (chip, flash, piggy, etc) that is sold by itself. Bully Dog will sell you a tuner that dumps in a bunch of fuel and raises the boost and off you go. If you look at a company like Banks Engineering they offer a proper kit. New intake, new exhaust (from the turbo back), intercooler upgrade, of course a tuner module, and to get the most out of it you also drill and tap the exhaust manifold to install a pyrometer to keep heat in check and lower the boost if it gets excessively hot (something I have not seen in any 335 etc). You also get gauges to keep an eye on boost and exhaust gas temps. the Banks system also reduces power during shifts to protect the trans. If Banks tunes a BMW Diesel I'll take notice, otherwise I'll pass. Last edited by KenB; 09-02-2009 at 05:49 PM. |

i have been running with this for about 6 months now on my X5 twin turbo diesel... car hasn't missed a beat... My business partner has an X6 with the same engine but no tuning box and it easily pulls away from him!
Georges Jobé uses the P-Tronic additional box unit in his BMW X6. The motocross champion gives his opinion on the power increasing device. Its a lot of fun for the money - no real change to fuel consumption |

But I bet the more "fun" you have, the more "real" the change in fuel consumption.

A guy I know had a similar tuner box with an adjustable min to max switch...( I think his maximum hp was around 370hp) I really don't know which company. He always had it on max and the result was after six months to crack his turbine! He was very lucky because he was under warranty. I have done Hartge remap that gets you up to 335hp.. Knock on wood after 1 year the car is still as new!

Anyone else, Boz or Centrofly, pull the trigger on one of these plugin's?

I have been using a piggy back devise called DPChip in Australia. I can adjust the setting in terms of power output to my liking which sits comfortably at 5. Been very happy with the outcome and do not really see any harm in chipping diesel. In Europe, a lot of ppl chipped their diesel either with similar piggy back or ECU flash etc and I have not come across anyone who has any problems.
What KenB said is quite true thou, it is better to play it safe thou considering that our cars are not cheap. That's why im looking at a new exhaust system for my X5 to keep EGT down abit during hot summer month in Australia. Need to be more careful with those chips that give u outragous output gains and always remember to stick to well-known brand. |
