Strange window operation

Windows (all of them) and moonroof in my X-5 opened by themselves this morning..as if the key fob button had been held in, but the keys were on the counter and no one was touching them. Went out to the car and it was wide open...

Has anyone experienced a "fault" like this?

later today also got a call from my neighbor that the car alarm had gone off...he checked things out and all was quiet...

Do I have an electrical gremlin?

Any ideas?

I'll be contacting the dealer, but looking if anyone has had similar issue..

thx

Sounds like there may be a problem with the switches in the drivers door latch/lock. If the switches are getting funky it might act like the key was in the switch held to the unlock position, opening her all up. This lifespan of switches is why BMW went away from regular microswitches in door latches to hall effect on the newer models.

You may have accidentaly sat on the key and pressed the door open for a few seconds without knowing. Just a possibility

Yeah, but he said in the original post that they were on the counter and no one was touching them...

where was key #2? If it happens more than once (different day), then go to the dealer.

Both keys were inside the house, on a counter... the window operation actually took place just before I got up, as the car had only a few raindrops inside (and we had heavy rain during the night)...fortunately, we noticed it and put the windows up before the next rain started...or I would have had a very wet interior, and a very hot temper....

When the alarm went off, same situation...keys were on the counter..not in any pockets, so no accidental button pressing...

hmmm....maybe I shouldn't leave the two keys together..seems like they might be messing around trying to make a little bmw....

This may be related but I had an issue with my car (non comfort access) where the headlights would come on automatically or the Taillights would not shut off. I have also had it where I would shut the car off, take the key fob out of the ignition and the car would act like it was still in the ignition without the car running, nav, radio and AC/Heater fans. The dealer just said it was a software glitch, updated the progman and It has not happened since.

If you have comfort access and left the keys too close, the hard rain could have let the car think that you were trying to open the door. And continuous touch would mean to open all the windows.

Just a thought. Move the keys further away.

Holy crap I just realized this is on an E70 vs E53... you ahve the newer style dooe latches with hall sensors vs switches, so disreguard my previous statement

I haven't seen this issue on the E70 yet at the shop, so have nothing to go on now off hand...

I have an E53 that occassionally does this. Weasel, please elaborate on how to nail this one down. Mine also opens the rear hatch, then the light runs the battery down. Sometime the windows are all open completely and sometimes they are just cracked open a bit.
