Can someone specify which battery they used upon replacement?
Amazon or ECS link?

I just went into a Meijer and popped the key open there and bought the matching battery.

Any grocery store or pharmacy in the USA should have it. Open it and read the number.

Shipping will exceed the value of the battery....

Autozone also sells these at the counter, for less than half the price at Target, Wallymart...

I just buy them from Amazon in bulk, a 10 pack is $6.

Ok, I have replaced the 2032 batteries in both mine and my wife's key fobs earlier this year. Both keys worked fine after the new batteries were installed.

When I replaced mine ~three months ago, I measured the old 3v battery with my voltmeter and it indicated 2.99 or 2.98 volts. I was shocked that the system could detect such a small drop in voltage... I also measured the new battery that I installed and it measured at 3.01v. Not much overhead there!

Now, only a few months after the above, I suddenly started getting the "fob battery low" message again a few days. I ignored it as it was intermittent and the battery was still new. Sure enough I couldn't start the car this morning until I put it in the dash slot. Then when I got to work I couldn't lock the car at all either, with the door handle or the key fob button.

I'll check the voltage on this battery when I get home to see what's going on. The fob batteries typically last years, correct?

Other bitch point about the key - why do you have to hold the Trunk Release button down EXACTLY 2.2 secs for it to work? If .1 secs too short, nothing happens. If .1 secs too long, the panic alarm sounds. Never get it right first try. Cripes!

So I got in the X5 after (the above) to go home and had no issues or warning messages.
Got home and measured the battery voltage in the fob and it was 2.984v.
No messages or issues this morning either. Finicky!!

Just so I can take appropriate precautions, would there ever be a case where I CAN NOT just stick the fob in the dash and go, even if the fob battery is dead?

I understand that I may have to use valet key to enter the vehicle, but could still use fob (in dash slot) once in the vehicle...

I'm sure the e70 gurus will chime in with any corrections due to updated information...but if EWS and the ability to start the e70 is like or built on the same foundation as older generations of BMWs with EWS...the battery inside the key has no affect on it's ability to start the vehicle because EWS is self-powered (thru induction) on older BMWs.

EDIT: based on some info I'm reading about the newer CAS/EWS key fob (remotes)...my assumption seems to be correct...a dead battery inside the key fob shouldn't stop it from starting the vehicle (see info highlighted below):

Thanks, Makes sense and is consistent with what I experienced.

So now the part that still isn't clear is why one day I get the message about remote battery low and it doesn't operate remotely, but the next day its fine. All on a fairly new battery. The manual makes a reference to Interference? I have installed nothing new in my garage that I can imagine would impact this.
