could it be to track the cars in their storage? Or something even like a security tag in a store as to prevent joyrides by idiot porters, etc?

Maybe asking the dealer would be the easiest way to satisfy everyone's curiosity.

Is your dealer in Kuwait perhaps?

Good find! Yes dealers such as the one in your link are using RF ID tags on vehicles to function as work orders and track vehicles on their lot and in their service dept. However they hang an id over the mirror and remove it when the vehicle is picked up by the customer. The sticker behind the mirror is more of a permanent id given to that vehicle...so they can keep track of the vehicle everytime it is brought in for service. The best RF ID tags can only track something up to about 150 feet or so, if that. So the dealer can't track anything once the vehicle leaves the lot. I guess your dealer is on the cutting edge of technology! I wonder how many other BMW dealers are using this technology...

We took delivery of or X5 35d last week. As our SA was going over details of the iDrive while we were parked with the engine & A/C running in 100+ degree blazing sunshine, he commented "How would you like to take the weekly inventory on a day like this?" I looked up to see two young ladies walking around the lot with clipboards.

I am getting tired of visiting the dealer every 3 months to change a broken part. Thank goodness for the 4 year maintenance/warranty plan but this BMW is sold before it expires.

I appreciate all the funny posts too!!
Hi was your fogging inside due to condensation..? I have reported similar but it may just be that the plastic lense cover needs a polish...
