I agree that it really stinks to have to pay tax on the Eco-money. I'm wondering though my dealer keeps referring to it as an option credit. Might that not be a better way to describe it than a "rebate" maybe this would make the difference?
In any event I have been witness to some of those strange tactics. When I lived in DC I moved from VA and wanted to transfer my E36 at the time. Unfortunately even though I paid sales tax on the car when i bought it and titled in VA. DC uses an "excise tax" so to register in DC I had to pay sales tax AGAIN (at 7% mind you)!! I ended up just buying a new car rather than pay tax on the same car twice.

You are both fortunate not to live in California (aka "Welfare State")! Sales tax in my neck of the woods is 9.75%!

Hugedrive,
Just curious, do you know what your invoice price included - as in what components (car, options, any fees etc)? Because I just went to my local dealer (well one of them), and had all my numbers ready and backed up w/the wholesale numbers, AmEx purchasing service price (for 2009 because they don't have 2010s yet in their system unfortunately) and was, not completely surprised that the dealer has managed to just as logically as I have justify tacking on $2400 to my numbers. IOW, did your "Invoice Price" over which you paid the $1400 include a) Dest Charge of $825,- b) Marketing Fee of ??? (you are in FL, I am in VA so this may be genuinely different). Thanks, spacey |

Everyone pays the destination fee
MACO and Training Fee are pretty standard as well. Bottomline is get your price or walk. That is your only true power here. Edmunds.com forum has a lot of deals spelled out there and a great place to read a lot about who, what, where, when and why on prices paid. |

I always thought so, and did so, as well. But... here's the quote from AmEx purchasing site's FAQ section:
"Does the price include all fees? Your special Cardmember price includes all manufacturer fees including destination. You are responsible for tax, title and documentation." Their final number is $X over invoice, for 2009 X5 it happens to be $500,- over invoice to be exact. NO Dest. Charge. spacey |

^^^ It all depends on your state law. It is important to remember that cars are taxed via a "Use Tax" and not a "sales tax", so the rules we are used to applying day in and out may not apply. (For example, we pay tax on cars we title in the state irrespective of where they are purchased- this isn't a normal sales tax transaction...)

Quote:
Invoice price (from the confidential sheet) for the car including all the options I wanted + dest. charge of $825 + training fee of $180 + MACO fee of 150$ + DEALER PROFIT OF $1250. The $4500 eco-credit was deducted from the after-tax total. Total price over invoice equals the total of all fees that are not on the confidential invoice sheet. For me, that is: $1250 dealer profit + $150 MACO fee = $1400. |
