What does the manual say? Are your tires staggered? I don't think they need to be rotated.
Yeah, my manual says it's not recommended.

A lot of tire shops offer free annual rotation if you buy all four tires from them. I guess its an annual thing? Maybe not with an X5?

Not staggered - checked my manual as well and it says the same thing but I don't understand why they don't recommend it. Tires do wear faster in the front than in the rear - turning and weight distribution.

FWIW, BMW recommends tires not be rotated.
BMW feels that after tires are rotated, the handling is compromised for a period of time until the tire "adopts" the wear pattern of its new location/alignment. Last edited by Penguin; 10-13-2009 at 02:38 PM. |

I have never rotated my tires.
I bought 4 new tires after about 45K miles and they all wore at the same rate. Of course I don't have run flats and that might make the difference but if the manual doesn't recommend it then maybe that could be the correct advice.

Run-flats or not, I don't plan to rotate my tires. As others have said, it's my understanding that BMW's recommendation is not to rotate.
I just replaced on the tires on my wife's SUV (after 42K miles). I never rotated the wheels and one tire was a little more worn on the outside. Got all wheels aligned when new tires installed. |

You should always have better tires in rear, always. It doesn't matter weather you have FWD, RWD of AWD. |

I did not rotate my tires, and ended up with them being slightly "cupped" (happens from hard braking). I've rotated the tires and the cupping went away week later.
You should do it just to have them turn in different direction. So you either follow up the BMW instructions and never do it, or rotate them every 5K-7K miles, this way there will be very little of "adoptation" after the rotation.
