That is just BMW.
Service says to use SD (sport drive) if you don't like it.
All my gas versions did it hope the diesel doesn't.

diesel has it and it catches you off guard sometimes when in a turn and the power response comes just after you needed it...

I had a 335i with the transmission lag (aka turbo lag) and have looked for a similar lag in the X5d without success.

You have to plan aheaaaaaad if you are going to pass someone on a two lane road.

I still remember the first time I passed someone in the 325!!

I have had 3 other X5's. 2001,2004,2005 and they didn't have the lag I'm having with my 2008 3.0. The dealer did an software update that helped a little, but it doesn't respond like it should. "The Ultimate Driving Machine"???

Our 2001 4.4i did not have ANY trottle lag. From what I've read, this is largely an E70 transmission programing issue where BMW has tried to improve MPG by starting off in 2nd and other tricks when stopped. The end result is that E70 can't quite make up their minds what gear to be in when pulling away from a stop until you give some direction with your foot

Tambalolong is right. There is a SIB update for this issue (and it works too!). See this thread

I had the software update, and I don't think it really helped much. It's still dangerous when turning left across traffic - you never know if/when the vehicle will actually get moving. Impossible to drive smoothly. Very disappointing.
