I'd agree w/that... on the hwy I get MPG in upper 20s, in the city not so much... more like low to mid 10s in stop and go. Ok... maybe upper 10's if all the lights are green

That's the thing! I don't think they are going for the increased economy w/the hybrid. More like keeping the MPG from deteriorating even further while upping the power delivery. So from the stand point of getting something more economical they hybrid isn't it. Why I say the diesel is the only sensible middle ground. In fact if you look at any SUV hybrids the MPG sucks across the board, diesel's have simply better gas mileage on average and offer normal V8 class power at the same time. And w/the uber low emission systems in the new generation BMW, MB and VW/Audi I don't know if they aren't comparable to the hybrids (SUVs) as carbon emissions go per mile. Shame they don't get the HOV sticker!

I've had a '07 4.8 and now a '10 3.5d. My experience is that the gas mileage difference is significant even in the city. I was getting around 12 mpg in the 4.8 and now about 17.5 in a very green diesel. Highway is similarly different.

As for hp vs. torque, I think they both have excellent pick-up but the 3.5d feels lighter on its feet. The 4.8 was definitely smoother and at speed on the highway felt stronger (going from 55 to 70 mph for example).

I'm pretty happy with the diesel. I have had the occasional issue with certain pumps not working well on fill-ups but like the upgraded electronics on the '10.

Anyway, I picked up a brand new 2009 X5 3.0 a few weekends ago but still can relate to most of what you wrote. Before I start let me say that the dealership where I purchased the X5 only had one 2009 left and was willing to make me an exceptional deal to take it off their hands. Translation: I didn't have the luxury of hand picking options. However, with the exception of the Sport Package, it came with all the options I would have wanted and none of what I wouldn't have wanted.

Jet Black / Black Leather

Premium Package
Technology Package
Rear Climate Package
Running Boards
iPod and USB adapter
Heated Front Seats
Roof Rails
Space Saver Spare

1) Premium Sound - My X5 did not come with the premium sound system and from what others are reporting, I am not missing a thing. The way i see it, the stereo options are crap and premium crap! I came from a Lexus with Mark Levison audio and my X5 pales in comparison. Truthfully, the base system in my coworkers Rav4 blows the doors off my X5. Anyway, I spent the past weekend installing a small subwoofer and amp. Now with the bass at mid level the 10 stock speakers provide highs and mids while the subwoofer provide the lows. Much better!

2) Sport Package - I wouldn't mind having the sport package just for the larger wheels. The rest, meeeh I can live without! As for seats, I think the stock seats has just the right amount of firmness but it sounds like the sports seats are too firm.

4) Cold Weather Package - I definitely don't have a need for the cold weather package here in the SW but since I will not be here forever, I can forsee this option becoming useful. Besides, I had a Saab with headlamp washers that I only used to show off but never for necessity.

5) Comfort Access - I am sure if I had the option I would be glad to have it but since i don't, I don't really miss it. I've used this feature on Lexus loaner cars and thought it was cool.

6) Rear Climate Package - Whether heating or cooling this options will definitely get some usage.

7) Premium Package - A must have!

9) iPod / USB - Works very well with my iPod 5th gen. Tonight I will try using an iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS.

10) Tech Package - Love it although still pales in comparison to those used in the Honda and Acura line. The POI (Point of Interest) feature selection needs some improvement and there should be an option to return back to the navigation screen if you venture away to adjust the radio, climate, etc

11) Smartphone integration - Not sure what "integration" part you are referring to but my Droid works very well with the X5's Bluetooth.

12) Running boards - Totally agree.....especially in the rain.

I also would like to add the Panaramic Roof is awesome!

Look at it this way, all the extras you and others opted for will garner a higher demand thus helping in the resale value.

Guess he liked his x then?

Don't know how I could get my avg. MPG down to 17.5 city in my 2010 X5d? Does that low number strike anyone else as unusually low?

Do you tow anything?

Just a thought (which has been discussed before)
You play crap on the system and what you will hear
is crap coming out of your system.

Set the treble @ 100%, Bass at 50%
then if you have a CD insert this 24bit CD.
Fourplay, selection, 101 Eastbound.

Remember the art of mastering recordings
in today's popular music is almost non existent.

In the winter, my mileage goes down due to winter diesel and cold temps. I manage to get 17-18 MPG in the city. Once the engine warms up, my mileage improves. In the summer, I get 20-21 MPG city, 25-27 MPG on the highway @ 80 MPH. With the air off, I've seen 27.5 highway MPG @ 80 MPH.

Some have said they're seeing 30 MPG on the highway, they must drive slower than I do.

Craig
