HELP: Heating and A/C Unit Turn ON all the time after Ignition.

Our HVAC unit always turns ON after Ignition. This is regardless of the last setting and it happens with either of the two key FOB's we have. I've read all of the information available on these forums regarding this issue and understand it to be a Key Memory Issue. We've taken our X5 to the local dealer and when we explain the issue, they look at us if we're nuts! I had to print out the information from this forum to help them out. It's been in twice and both times the Service Advisor said that they have taken care of the programming. The report basically states, "...SET IHKA TO KEY SPECIFIC TO SET FOR OFF POSITION WHEN KEY IS ON."

I don't want the HVAC unit to come ON automatically. We want full control, either key.

If it has been programmed correctly by the dealer, is there an additional step we need to do to set it up; not come on on ignition. I've ran through the memory sequence for the seats/radio and such but it still doesn't work.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself correctly to this Service Group or they really are a bunch of dummies!

Any help, suggestions and/or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

2006 X5

It's normal that it turns on after every ignition. But if the HVAC setting is different from the previous one on the same key, then it might have a problem.

It's normal when the default setting is set to "active." I went to the dealer to de-activate this setting via the programming but it still turns on. I'm just wondering if there is another sequence that has to follow (performed by the user) after it's been de-activated.

Here's the post link for the Car / Key Memory Default Settings.

Thanks for the response.

The link only applies to 1st gen X5s. I haven't yet heard anyone who could deactivate the HVAC on every startup.
I think it's programmed that way to E70s and it's not something dealers can choose to activate/deactivate, unless BMW rectifies their programming to give dealers this option.

Why would you not want the HVAC on ? If you drive with it off the car will mist up and you will be sitting in a box of stale air.

Thanks for the feed back.

I assumed that the link to the memory topic was for all models 1999 and up. It makes more sense if our model can not be de-activated (although the BMW Service Center should have known this but still took our $127 for the hour of shop labor!).

The wife and I can't agree on temp settings (whether in the house or the car); I like it warm, she likes it cold so the best thing for us is to have it off and set it after we take off. We also live up in the Great White North so the weather tends to be all messed up (hot/cold/hot/cold). Another thing is that there isn't an HVAC "OFF" button so it always starts up with 3/4 full power...I know I'm lazy and it's not a problem to hit the decrease button.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone here who has a 2006 X5 (Executive Package Model) can physically confirm if their HVAC turns ON all of the time at ignition and/or have had a dealer de-activate the option.

This site is great for information...thanks a million!

If you have a 2006 X5, then it's a first generation and the link probably applies to your model. And you're in the wrong section of the forum. Go to E53 forum and post, they'll know a lot better about it.
