iDrive Firmware Update and Google Maps

I have a 2008 X5 with Nav. It does not have the ability to receive addresses from Google Maps. Has anyone been able to update the iDrive firmware to get this feature on 2008 and/or 2007 X5. I know it works on the 2009 X5 Nav.

Thanks

It works on the 2010 X5 nav (hard disk based). I don't see it being able to work with the older iDrive system.

It works on the 2009s as well, have confirmed it in my colleague's X5, he has the 2009 X5 35d, which does not have the upgraded HD based navigation.

IIRC the Google Maps capability is linked to the switch from CDMA to GSM for BMW Assist etc.. This switch happened at different times for different BMW models.

You may want to search for the press releases about the introduction of the Google Maps capability in X5s.

BMW Assist MyInfo

Check out the BMW website, www.bmwusa.com/bmwassist, then chose "MyInfo FAQ. Here's what it says:

"If you are driving a 2008 X6 produced 4/08 or later or any 2009 and later BMW Assist-equipped BMW (except X3) and have a valid BMW Assist subscription, you will be able to send and receive the destination and phone number in your vehicle through MyInfo".

I just had my 2010 X5 35d at the dealer trying to get this to work. Problem was the BMW Assist people had typed my email address (which is also your account number) incorrectly. After that works fine. From the main menu select BMW Assist/Messages or Phone/Messages. The BMW Assist people who were helping me troubleshoot the problem same that on the Google Maps site, enter your email address in ALL CAPS. I found that it works with ALL CAPS or all lowercase.

Thanks for the replies, I guess if there was a hardware switch from CDMA to GSM, updating the firmware will not help.

Yes, the TCU did get upgraded to GSM ... but even if you replaced youre TCU it wouldn't make any difference.

All the features you have in the car are coded to your VIN #.

I recently had to have my 2009 CCC replaced. THe hardware was all replaced fine, but the BMW center couldn't actually code the car for the new CCC until BMW North America had issued the unlocking code to enabling coding of the computer and all relevant features that were available for my VIN#.

I can confirm though that MY 2009 Nav with BMW Assist did include MY INFO and the google maps capability.
