I don't think the older Cummins ISBs ever passed that test, yet I believe the new 2010 Cummins engine comes pretty close. I've never had to shut off the engine at the drive thru on the X5, and like Penguin........I like the sound at idle.......

I have to shut off my older F250 Powerstroke at the drive through. Really.

Speaking of sounds...I was in Stuttgart, at the Porsche museum.. they have an area where you can stand and listen to a few different engines. It is kind of a surround sound dome. Historical engines, not just modern ones but older race motors. What an absolute TREAT! I love hearing motors. The sounds is a RESULT of the motor... the motor shouldn't be designed for sound.

Anyone see "Truth in 24"? About the Audi Lemans program. (Highly recommended!) Their diesels are almost silent (compared to the other cars)... the chief designer said "Noise out the exhaust is energy- we just capture that energy"

Craig is correct, the Bridgestone tires tend to be noisy. On my 2008 I swapped them out for quieter/softer tires.

I also have not had any wind noise of my 2008 or 2010.

I believe when it comes Wind Noise, it is not whether you have it or not, it is you feel it or not. Outside dynamics does not change from vehicle to vehicle.

Where are you guys coming up with 100-db. levels for the 30i? Believing that the 35d is producing more than 100-db. is ridiculous. 100-db. is roughly the sound of a passing subway train at 10-feet or the average human yelling.

In fact, the loudest a human can yell is usually about 120-db. for VERY short spurts.

There's absolutely no way the 30i is putting off 100-db., unless it's under all-out acceleration.

That sounds loud even for a late model Ferraris at full acceleration which usually puts off no more than 99 to 100 decibels, when one is standing directly next to the exhaust.

Well, I wasn't saying 30i generates 100db, I am trying to get 35d clatter level in comparison 30i with 30i as benchmark. 100 there is supposed to serve as benchmark. Sorry for the confusion.

I took it once to the dealer, he said its twin turbo noise/spooling and all that.
I have 2500 miles as of now, Even the wind noise is too much in my X5d, After I play the cd/radio...@ 65/70 mph..I hear the wind noise/road noise...its so annoying, I am going to the dealer again next week. Not sure some of this is related to RFT

I agree, engine clatter is more in the cold mornings, I am totally disappointed in this regard.

2010X5d, Any resolution to your noise problem ?
