This is a common issue -- the Nav DVD drive is faulty. It will trigger a fault code, the technician will replace your Nav DVD drive.

There is apparently a bulletin from BMW on this. Current "revised drive" is backordered so there is a fix. Mine was fine for 11 months and in the last few weeks, virtually everytime I start the car I need to eject and reinsert the dvd. Interesting as one dealer I went to acted as this was such a strange problem and they had no idea what was going on. Dealer #2 said, "oh yeah, we know what is going on", pulled the fault code, and gave me the part number for the new part they ordered for me. First dealer had car 2 full days and "could not reproduce problem." Funny as when I picked up the car from the first dealer, immediately the nav said "please insert dvd" At that point, they didnt seem to care it was broken.

Wait... a 'dunkin donuts'? Are you sure? Depending on what store you stopped at, it could be electrical... or .. ![]() It is either a bad disc, dirty/defective laser head, or internal nav failure. In older nav units, I've see this with burned copies of data discs, or as nav units age the laser optics get dirty.... Under warranty or not? |

I had a similar problem. Mine stopped working for about 2 weeks then would work for a day or two, then stop again. This went on for about 2 months. I was waiting for my annual service to get it fixed. They had a hard time diagnosing the problem. They said my car was causing their computer to crash. In the end they just replaced the DVD. So it's not always the DVD drive. The DVD is not covered under the warranty, but Circle BMW paid for it to keep customer satisfaction high. That worked for me.

People ask the SA "is it covered", SA says "no", their conclsuion is "not covered".
Reading the 2010 warranty statement, there is no exclusion that would exclude the DVD disc. if the disc was ABUSED- as evidenced by scratches- they could deny the claim. But that is a finding and not just a 'dvd is not covered. Editorial comment: BMW seems to determine warranty coverage- new car and CPO warranty- based on a parts list. Unfortunately (for us and them) the terms of the warranty cover BOTH parts and 'failure modes'... so a part could be legally covered if it fails one way, and not covered another way. (Clutch is one example.) Anyway, I bring this up so people know to not just rely on 'what the dealer says' |
